I can't believe I'm seeing a thread on Yoshkar-Ola! I was in this city two years ago.

Interesting place: very spacious.

Lots of new building in classical style.

Why did they pick a Venetian theme to some of them (e.g. third to last picture) ?

I just felt, as an American, that it was a very unknown city. People seemed to be shocked that we were there. It is by far the most "exotic" place I've ever been in my life. I guess maybe to Russians it is not unknown, but outside of Russia I would guess that it is. That's all. I didn't mean offense.

I haven't been offended at all. May be it's just a language barrier.

But you are right, the town isn't well know even in Russia. Mainly 'cause it's a provincial town which looks pretty much similar to many other provincial towns that loosed their village status during SU times. I believe, I've seen something on "99 percent" similar in surroundings of Moscow and Yekaterinburg, on Volga shores and in north-western Kazakhstan.

And it would stayed like this if not the new and fancy construction, which is looks very exotic. Someone was very glad to show pictures of the place last spring so hence the SSC delegation an photos.

Classical? To be honest, I haven't seen enough classical architecture, yet the Venetian style, but the buildings looks rather Disney than classical Which is no so bad considering that it drown attention to something that would been forsaken otherwise.

Why do the pick up this style? I don't know. Probably someone spent nice holiday in Southern Europe and was impressed by it, especially by Piazza San Marco

Or may be it is because of Sheremetyev's Palace in Republic of Mari El:

But it looks that Sheremetyevs also spent fun hours in Italy, just several century earlier.

By classical I didn't mean classic in the Greek sense, but not modern/modernist...rather an imitation of old architecture.
