My hope for Kota Kinabalu public transport system.

Improve the City Bus sytem, well the City Bus introduction brought the modern bus service to Kota Kinabalu and specified bus stop location.

But more should be done.

Smart Card can be distributed for frequent bus users in Kota Kinabalu (as an incentive for using the bus), and also proper route map for City Bus.

Buses should be equipped with GPS and a pole with LED sign to tell passengers of the next bus arrival time based on GPS)...

Sabah state railway can be improved, extend it northwards to Sepanggar, or better....up to Kudat. Buy improved diesel trains for faster and more efficient operation.

Wrong Interpretation - why? People does not get attracted to buy car because of better road system. Think about this situation "Hey honey, the new freeway Sepanggar-Papar freeway is already completed and ready for use, can I buy a new car so I could drive my own to go to work instead of taking the bus?". People will buy car for better mobility reason not because of the road getting better. Increasing number of cars resulted in urban sprawling is strictly because of population growing - more people move in into one particular city, more vehicles are running on the road. In fact, saya yang tinggal dekat2 kampung mati2 pujuk bapa sya beli truck (Isuzu Invader let say) since the roads in kampung2 (Sabah scope) are mostly gravel road <- this is hypothetical situation btw, yet, I'm trying to make a point there
Uh, yes...I do agree with you that just because the roads are better, that doesn't mean more people will buy cars. In fact, better roads and traffic flow management are of course needed. But it needs to be paired with good planning with public transportation in mind too. For example, if we can build expressways, why can't dedicated bus lanes be built - just a rhetorical question. In fact people will be less likely to buy cars provided there are alternatives, such as buses as you said. The problem is our public transportation is bad...bad.
Of course this issue also correlates with our current low density, urban sprawl that further limits the effectiveness of public transport and thus a higher need for cars for mobility.

Expressways attract traffic since it is easier to travel on. Traffic that used to go on other smaller roads to go somewhere will now concentrate on the expressway, hence increasing traffic on the expressway leading to maximum capacity being reached faster. This in turn starts the expansion cycle I wrote about previously. It has something to do with induced demand.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induced_demand

Expressways that go further from the city core will even encourage sprawls as it allows people to move away from the city if they can- ahh the suburbia dream. Of course, one might question why should we keep people in the city since we have so much land to go develop. Well I won't answer that since you will have to look up cities that have population and development concentrated in effectively in one area - especially those with little land to go but those are extreme examples. No doubt sprawl will inevitably happen since we have so much land for our small population, only thing is that we just need to control it with good planning. Denser sprawls (I don't know if that is possible) and plan it so it will go in hand with public transit is what I could imagine but that's just me.

Expressways that are close to the city, with public transportation in mind...I have no objection. It is those that go kilometers and km away from the city core, encouraging sprawls, that is wasteful and destructive.

"road system in Malaysia is the best In South East Asia. And 2nd best in Asia, after Japan" Dude, where did you read this???

"the population of Australian are mostly in cities and the density is greater" ...know why the telco companies in Oz not doing as well as USA and European countries ??? It is because the Oz population is sparely populated. They need to have very good road system because they depend very much on their primary produce.

i personally think that enhancing the expressway is an option but not the best one. Creating a better infrastructure would be best, providing more efficient buses and they might have to think about metros. Congestion is part of life, even in UK, its a problem during peak time although the road system is really good. The KK government should have created a better masterplanning and implement the construction time duration of 10-20 years for a strong foundation. They forget that bombarding projects isnt the way to go. Also, with better expressway, how would it help tourist? KK wants to rake in 4 million visitors by 2011/2012, better and easier transportation between destination would definitely help, bigger roads wont. The link between spaces and buildings is distort by non-coherent design and understanding of space.

When I visited KK two years ago, I remembered the area around gaya street was very jam even outside peak hours. I hate to think what it was like during busy time then.

With all the developments going on at the moment, I am sure there will be plenty of hotel/motel rooms for the visitors

that is why they have should have done a proper masterplanning, if you look at how the road all interlink, its just horrible, and if they do implement underground metros or LRT, less car would be use. honestly, not being back to KK for so many years, driving around KK can actually be abit intimidating and confusing.

yea there are alot of developments that is being done, and apparently we are still about 4000 rooms short, im not very sure if this calculation is true but that is base on something i read before.

Ferry Service To Boost Travel Between Sabah And Brunei

BEAUFORT, July 5 (Bernama) -- Ferry services between Muara in Brunei and Menumbok near here, is expected to make a big impact on tourism and promote an alternative two-way travel.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said the proposal tabled by the state government recently had received positive response from the Brunei government, while the implementation of the project had been handed to the private sector.

Once operational, the ferry service would reduce travel time between Sabah and Brunei significantly, from seven to eight hours by land, to only two hours by sea.

"Though we suggested Sipitang earlier, Menumbok was chosen because Menumbok already had ferry services in place, so it can be carried out immediately," he told reporters after launching Pesta Rumbia (Sago Festival) here Sunday.

Asked when the services will start, Masidi said: "It will depend on how fast the private sector implemented the project. The government has facilitated the laws and we hope the initiative will be taken by the private sector of both countries."

Ferry operators in Sabah had already stated readiness to start operations once the main issues of concern had been ironed out.

Masidi said the suggestion was a result of discussions with the Brunei government earlier this year, and among other initiatives include a Memorandum of Understanding between the Sabah Tourism Board and Royal Brunei, in a joint effort to promote Sabah and Brunei as tourist destinations.

Meanwhile, Masidi said that Rumbia trees not only had potential for food products such as sago, but also as a brand for Kuala Penyu.

He said Kuala Penyu could be seen as a special district for the cultivation of Rumbia trees which apart from providing revenue for the locals, will also be a good tourist attraction.

"We need to cultivate Rumbia trees to prevent its extinction since such products cannot be found in other places," he added.

Hey Quiroz, and for those who are discussing about transport system. This may be something of interest

hmmm having a ferry in Menumbok because there is already a port there, how would the tourist then travel to the city? Is that not an extra work? There are existing port in KK and new ones that is being developed, is that a better option?

Not sure but the news is almost 4 years old. Went back two years ago and I didn't see it happening. Judging from your response, I think it is still on the table...... or already in the bin

Thanks for agreeing with. It seems like many commentators here don't agree with me in some level.

On top of my opinion, the betterment of KK is not only about the expressway alone but the integration of transportation and infrastructure planning as a whole. I wrote this with booze buzzing my head.

uh huh, better infrastructure is the way to go. a better masterplanning, a better road design, better linkage. i just feel the expressway can be dealt with later once the basic foundation is done.

eric - im confused too and just voted too, it seems we are winning atm.
