indeed, stock was due to go in today but an accident on the m62 pushed that back, seems they've really been pushing to get this store open as soon as possible.

Was hoping for something better, what with Textiles Direct just a few units along, but its better than nothing. It would be good if they didnt put up that garish orange signage that they have on all their other shops.

Market's opening gets icy response from rival traders
http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/local...nse.5834531.jp ![]() UNWELCOME: Critics claim that Hull’s German Christmas Market, which opens tomorrow, threatens other businesses. Picture: Terry Carrott. Date: 18 November 2009 By Simon Bristow THE arrival of a German Christmas market in Hull city centre has been met with an icy response from local businesses. German traders have spent a week setting up their stalls at the Christkindl Market in Queens Gardens and King Edward Street after being invited to the city by managers at Hull's Business Improvement District (BID). Organisers say it will help create temporary jobs for local people and boost festive footfall figures for all businesses in the area. But critics claim it is channelling money away from Hull-based firms – and is not even authentic. Shane Norris, who runs Level, a café bar in Savile Street, said: "I lived in Germany for a number of years and it's nothing like a German market I've ever seen. "A lot of the stalls are duplicated and you've basically got four or five stalls just selling German sausages. "We are struggling to make money as it is and the money that is going into these stalls just disappears out of the town." The BID said 30 seasonal jobs had been created for local people to help out on the stalls. Announcing the market's arrival, the BID said: "German markets are a traditional favourite in many towns and cities in Europe and the UK, offering a family friendly environment for shopping, or a seasonal drink, and meet with friends after work. "It brings a continental theme to Hull city centre and will even open on Boxing Day." BID manager Ken Baldwin added: "There are over 20 Germans and their families working on the market in Hull, they have even brought their children to join local schools until the Christmas Holiday. They are very enthusiastic and chose Hull over a number of other possible sites.

Well, my gran never comes into the city centre anymore, but she really wants to visit this and will be doing her christmas shopping in other stores whilst she is in the centre.
Got to say "bravo Shane" - Am I right in thinking that this is the only Christkindl German market that will be operating in Yorkshire? A lot of good is often spoke about these German christmas markets and a lot of people travel to go to them - there could have been people from all over the region planning on visiting the city for the market and would obviously do some christmas shopping in other stores whilst here, otherwise it would be a waste of time - so by the time they've had a german sausage and done some shopping, they may fancy a coffee and a bun. Now you've broadcast to the region that YOU think it's not authentic and that it's just "four or five stalls selling German sausages", these people will probably not bother now, so you won't see these popping into your cafe for a coffee and a bun. Nothing like a short-sighted businessman - no wonder you're struggling for money! |

It seems like short term leases are being issued down Whitefriargate to encourage empty units to be occupied over Christmas. Unfortunately its the usual tacky stuff for Christmas. Couldnt the empty units be filled with innovative/decorative window displays rather than rows of Christmas Cards and party outfits.

Different kind of 'Model' shop I think. I've been by the Model Zone in Leeds - it's more like the Gadget Shop version of Model shops. More remote controlled cars e.t.c. where-as the one of Ferensway is abit more 'Hornby'.

How many empty units left in St. Stephens now?
Taking into account the new gym, medical facility and Model Zone. Also any news on when the gym and medical facility will open and where the medical facility will be?

The health centre is going to be in the smaller unit at the front. The unit at the side fronting onto the Square next to Hull Truck also has posters for the health centre which leads me to assume thats the same unit.
Not sure i would class this as an 'exciting development' as the posters suggest. It seems to me like just an excuse to fill a unit that should have been snapped up ages ago. Obviously the majority of the public arent going to be aware of the long list of restaurant operators that were targeted yet none wanted to open there. The Gym as dazzar said could be opening where the old Gala Bingo was on the 2nd floor. As for remaining empty units, I believe that the whole 'street' section is now let with only the very prominent corner unit outside to be let. Very suprised that this is the case. Also quite disappointed that there have been no new announcements about restaurants. The 1st floor, apart from Nandos/Prezzo still looks quite bare. I went to Prezzo the other day for my birthday - was alright, but it's quite expensive. the drinks are £2.50 each and only 200ml versions. There was 5 of us and the bill came to £95.

I find it amazing how much space there actually is in St. Stephens.
Thanks for the info

1) all members of staff had a poor grasp of English which made ordering difficult 2) the order was wrong each time 3) ridiculously long wait for food; about 45 minutes just for bread that was overcooked to the point where it was black 4) extremely rude manager Is it still that bad?
