I like Tyne Bridge Tower - okay the materials are shoddy but a sensitive recladding could make it look a lot better. The dimensions of the tower are very nice and slender, something squat, bulky modern offices these days, with their larger floorplates, are not. I also think it looks good where it is on the skyline, it gives a bit of depth to gateshead and is a prominent visual marker. In fact there's a bit of symmetry going on, Cale Cross by the bridge on the newcastle side, and this on the other side. I know that if they knock it down we'd end up getting something smaller and fatter so no thanks.

I have to agree I don't think it should be demolished unless it is going to replaced with something similar in size just of a much better quality. Which of course is going to be a lot more expensive than just a re-clad, which is what has been approved.

VIEWS from TBT in 2005, as previously mentioned in the "57 Quayside" thread. I will post all of them in the Photography Thread, in due course, but these few seem appropriate here, at this point . . .

The BOAT is still there . . .

A good one of the re-clad Cale X . . .

View of the Quayside and the corner of the Sage . . .

The Sage, with 'little people' on the roof!

and finally the soon to be lost forever . . .

When i say i want TBT to be demolished i am thinking purely from an external point of view - it just doesnt look good and im not sure whether a re-clad/refurd would make a difference

The views from inside the tower are indeed impressive BUT surely the impact it makes externally is more important (then again it does depend on whom you ask)

As promised, these photos and the others from my 2005 visit to TBTs roof, have now been posted on the 'Newcastle Metro Area Photography' thread.

I agree, I'm not sure a re-clad would do any good, it really is horrible. I wouldn't have any concerns about it being brought down. Who is to say an even better tower wouldn't go up in it's place with as good views, I mean this is Gateshead council we are talking about, and it is in their heartfelt place (along the river), if it was NCC then I would have concerns of how long, and what would be in it's place.

Whatever happens, we need a landmark building of confident height in this spot. Anything less is unnacceptable!

Not really, we need a pretty building, a landmark building?, not really, a tall building?, not really. In my opinion alot of tall buildings seem to be unpretty, and not every building can be a landmark building, otherwise we will be an area of a mix and match buildings that have no relevence what so ever. All I want is a pretty building in it's place, a landmark building or tall building is not a must, a building which serves it's purpose well and isn't disliked, nor over hyped is more important.

It is a decent height, but like the horrific brown tower on the North side of the river it is an absolute eyesore.

Shame, would rather have seen a re-clad .. some of the renders were quite decent, another opportunity wasted.

Yet another 'urban wasteland' heading our way

Should I reserve a place on the "GAP Sites" thread for this, and the Bank of England site, do you think?

I think we might see a replacement go up quite quickly. Prime spot for a hotel or office building, good transport links etc.

i dont. i think this will end up as part of the masterplan for the convention centre area which will drag on for years, leaving us with a nice big empty spot...

i think the factory site nearby also got snapped up for the same purposes recently.

One North East are going to see a big budget cut soon. I doubt they're going to do anything with it.

Hmm, I'm not sure whether this is good news or bad news. Currently the tower is in a poor condition, however once it is gone how long will it be before something is developed here. As mentioned we could be left with another gap site for a long time. The other problem is I can't see anything getting permission as tall as it, therefore whatever goes in its place is going to be large at ground level.

Gateshead might insist the site is landscaped as an interim measure?

Yes.

Watching the way the construction industry and real-estate market is moving, I have a hunch we ought to start getting used to these.
