Sainsbury's have pulled out citing "On going problems with the development".

I can't unfortunately, simply because I don't know anymore.

I heard a week or so ago which was unconfirmed that they had pulled out over something to do with the planning application being rejected but I know it was actually accepted. Anyway since then I've just heard it's something to do with the development which could mean anything.

Looks like the developer still has plans - renewal of PA as at January 2012. Perhaps another supermarket chain

2008/0716/03/REN | Renewal of planning permission: Erection of a 4 storey Building comprising plant room to basement, 2 units (retail/restaurant - Class A1/A3) and lobby to offices at ground floor; and office accommodation (Class B1) at first to third floors following demolition of existing picture house | Former Jesmond Picture House Lyndhurst Avenue Newcastle upon Tyne

I'm not sure if they have someone else lined up or not. It's only in the last 2 weeks where Sainsbury's have pulled out so this application pre-dates Sainsbury's pulling out.

Just passed the site today and felt a wave of resentment for that cinema full of memories (and pigeons!) being pulled down for, seemingly, nothing! Any more news or rumours?..

There was talk of a Sainsbury's store opening up in Jesmond again lately, however the actual site was not revealed. It could have been a return to this site or another. To my knowledge they have pulled out of it anyway.

.
Four and a half years after the sad demolition of the Jesmond Cinema, I took these photos last week.

This is what the site looks like today (April 2014) . . .
