Rotterdam, port and city

All photos taken 5 Sep 2009 from a small plane above the port of Rotterdam and the city itself.

1. Skyline view at take-off from Rotterdam Airport.

3. Part of the 'Westland' greenhouses district for vegetables and flowers.

5. One of the giant arms of the 'Measlantkering' storm surge barrier.


6. 4th petrol port with oil tankers Siri Knutsen (187m long, 28m wide) en Kastelorizo (183m long, 32m wide).


7. EECV iron ore and coal bulk terminal. In the background the BP oil refinery and on the foreground the bulk carrier Berge Pacific (315m long, 55m wide).


8. Maasvlakte Oil Terminal and the Liquid Natural Gas Terminal under construction, each gigantic tank is 50m high.


9. Maasvlakte Oil Terminal has 36 storage tanks, each 22m high.


10. New ECT Euromax container terminal with container ship Cosco China (334m long, 43m wide).


11. Automatic carts transport the containers.


12. End of the artificial created Maasvlakte port area, a new extension area is being created.


13. New coal power station under construction (175m high chimney) next to an existing power station (171m high chimneys).


14. APM container terminal and the ECT Delta container terminal.


15. Container ship Maersk Stepnica (334m long, 43m wide).


16. Container ship Hyundai Brave (340m long, 46m wide).


17. 6th petrol port.


18. Sea town of Hook of Holland, a part of Rotterdam.


19. P&O's 'Pride of Rotterdam', one of world's largest ferries (about 215m long), sails between Rotterdam and Hull (United Kingdom).

I think Rotterdam is one of the most ambitious cities in Europe!
Gigantic port, excellent public transport and beautiful new skyscrapers: Well done Holland!

Nice collection! Some great skyline shots but I really enjoyed the photos of the port areas too. I think I admire cargo ships and port facilities for the same reason I like skyscrapers - I'm impressed by their size and scale. A cargo ship or cruise ship is kinda like a skyscraper just tipped on its side. And what makes it even more interesting is that they are constantly coming and going, so its like an ever changing skyline! I started a thread ages ago about the variety of different ships that visited our local port but seemed no one was interested. Anyway, I digress
