As this project is now progressing strongly, and covering an increasingly large area of Newcastle, I thought people might be interested in looking back at how Newcastle Great Park actually came into existence.

I have a fair few papers, going back to the early days of the NDA (as it used to be known) . . . the "Northern Development Area".

I will start these in the next post . . .

Anger over Newcastle Great Park shop’s plan to sell drink
by Dan Warburton, The Journal, May 17 2011

FAMILIES have reacted angrily to a shop’s second bid to secure permission to sell alcohol, claiming it would spark an increase in anti-social behaviour.

Fears teenage gangs would take to the streets of Newcastle Great Park, Newcastle, saw local residents object to plans for a licensed shop when an application was submitted to Newcastle City Council in February.

That bid was thrown out by a city council committee, which said that it could “potentially lead to crime and disorder”.

However, managers at the Londis store, on Featherstone Grove, have submitted an almost identical application to sell alcohol between 8am and 8pm.

Neighbours have said crime, loitering teenagers and alcohol-fuelled violence would increase if the plans were given the green light.

One person who objected said: “An almost identical licence application was refused by the committee on February 15, 2011.

Ridiculous that a local shop shouldn't be able to sell alcohol. Is it a quaker stronghold or something? Would piss me off that these Nimby's who probably drive to Asda for their alcohol would stop me being able to shop locally if I lived there.

Seconded.

One of the (many) things I dislike about Newcastle Great(?) Park is the high dependency on motor transport which appears to be a design feature.
Another is the LACK of people apparent in its paths and pavements.
Another is the LACK of shops and other local facilities.
Another is the LACK of distance between homes and roads.

No wonder its led to folks sitting in their sealed cubicles in terror of what might be lurking right outside their windows!

Historical Newcastle Great Park Documents: No. 6 - November 1998

Brunton Park proposals, Proposals Document becomes the 'Master Plan', and Castle Ward debates the NDA.

The road-closure proposals and widening of Brunton Lane proposal . .

The "Proposals Documents" becomes the "Master Plan" on which the gradually emerging NGP we have today is based . .

This was a 'stormy' meeting . .

Just as an 'aside' . .

Looking back at this series of historical NGP documents now, one thing I have noticed that is 'revealed' by them (not actually NDA or NGP related, at all!) but if you look at the documents shown in Part 5 (August 1998) and those in Part 6 (November 1998) it must have been during that 3 month period in 1998, that the City Council changed its LOGO from the traditional one . . .

to the modern style one (as it was described at the time) that we still have today . . .

Just a little bit of 'trivia'!

Another bit of trivia re the modern logo.

The Graphics department were asked to come up with a number of options for a new, up to date logo for Newcastle. They duly came up with a selection of possible logos but found themselves one short. So they quickly came up with a logo using a quirky typeface (it was a friday afternoon afterall :-) ) to make up the numbers. Imagine their surprise when the quirky one was chosen!!

Cheers

Historical Newcastle Great Park Documents: No. 8 - September 1999

NDA Bulletin No. 5a. The Public Inquiry is cancelled. The name "Newcastle Great Park" makes its first appearance.

Half way down on the right hand side of the first page of the above NDA Bulletin 5a, it says "You will find enclosed a colour leaflet prepared by the Development Consortium".

Here is that leaflet . .
