difference between freedom of speech and defamation

both the Fairfax and News Corp papers (esp for sport) are pretty much just reporting gossip now as fact

The line between the two is often very thin; I don't think this is the thread to discuss the Press Complaints Commission or whatever Australia's equivilient is.

It's the job of the papers to report what they hear, doesn't matter whether factual or not.

No, of course not.

Journalistic ethics count for nothing when the proprietor of your paper wants you to toe a company line.

actually it does have a bit of relevance

fairfax (which owns the paper in question) has been running at bit of a campaign against the WC bid

main example I see is their melbourne radio station is daily bagging soccer on its sports show during the WC, to the point their WC correspondant now refuses to work with them. some say its over-sensitivity, but at the start of the bid their GM said on radio that they would broadcast AFL in preference to WC games 99% of the time, and it would take something like a Australia vs England semi to make them reconsider a one off broadcast. They basically don't want it here because it will compete with their involvement in the AFL.

Normally this would just be a domestic issue only, but as mentioned elsewhere, the world media jumped on this story, the USA has pushed it for an inquiry, and FIFA like bids to have strong local support.

I don't want to comb through all the posts to find out, but would someone tell me what bids are official at this point. Australia, the United States? Who else?

Thanks! Australia should have a pretty good chance: virgin territory for the WC, good stadia, sporting culture, etc.

Needs more rectangular stadia with larger capacities though.

Everything else is perfect.

Yes, that too. All venues should have fan walks.

FFA are suing them, and if they have been spreading unsubstantiated rumors, then they have every right to. Journalism is trash in this country at the moment, you only have to look at Craig "fat toad" Hutchinson as proof of this.

Ethical standards say otherwise, people have been sued for spreading rumors. If for instance the Herald sun reports "what they hear" and engage in libelous claims, if they can't justify their claims, then they can be sued. And anyway, it's not the job of the newspapers to spread idle gossip, it's the job of the newspapers to spread the news.

Can that firefox logo be removed? Ugh.
