UNIVERSIADE TO BE GLOBAL EVENT
13 August 2009
China Daily

SHENZHEN: The opening and closing ceremonies for the Universiade Shenzhen 2011 - the top sports event for university athletes across the world - will have a carnival theme and give an "unexpected experience" to the young participants, officials said.

The committee has received about 20 creative ideas from the public bidding for the ceremonies of the 26th Summer Universiade, to be held Aug 12 to 22, 2011 in the southern city bordering Hong Kong.

"We want to highlight young people's vitality and creativity and make the opening and closing ceremonies, especially the latter, a big party for them," Liang Daoxing, director-general of the executive office of the organizing committee for Universiade Shenzhen, told China Daily in an exclusive interview yesterday.

The two-year countdown started yesterday.

The venue options for the closing ceremony could be an entertainment theme park or seaside, he said, adding that the winner of the bid, who will be selected from famous Chinese directors and creative teams involved with the Beijing Olympic Games, will be announced by the end of this year.

At least 13,000 student-athletes and officials from more than 160 countries will participate in the "biggest-ever Universiade" in Shenzhen. Athletes will compete in 24 sporting events for 302 gold medals.

The committee will offer a variety of opportunities for student-athletes and visitors to understand the economy, culture and social customs of Shenzhen.

The committee also will welcome journalists from around the world, Liang said.

"We welcome both registered and unregistered journalists to cover the event. We plan to give them the same treatment as the athletes," he noted.

The government of Shenzhen will invest about 7 billion yuan in the construction of the venues and facilities for television, as well as an information network, according to Liang.

"The construction of 22 new sports facilities are in full swing and the revamp of 36 existing projects will start soon. All these will be completed by the end of 2010," he said.

The local government also pledged to ensure the air quality of the city would meet the standard of the Beijing Olympic Games.

One of the measures is to eliminate the current 200,000 vehicles that do not meet the emission standard of the city by 2011, according to the city's environmental protection authority.

"The event provides a great opportunity for Shenzhen, a young and dynamic city with a short 29-year history, to improve the citizens' quality of life, as well as the city's transportation network, and environmental and ecologic protection," Liang said.

I live in Shenzhen and went to the area where they are building the main stadiums. The computer generated images are not accurate I believe, the layout of the actual stadiums is very different.

I uploaded photos of the universiade 2011 area in Shenzhen to my website.

This one is accurate:

This is the current swimming stadium:

And the main stadium:

The Shenzhen Bay sports complex is still very early in development, no steel structure at all yet.

FISU president hopes better to come in Shenzhen 2011

BELGRADE, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The President of International University Sports Federation (FISU) said the World University Games in Belgrade was a tremendous success but he expects an even better Universiade in Shenzhen in two years time.

"In all honesty, these games have been a tremendous success," said George Killian in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on the eve of the close of Universiade 2009.

Killian noted that in the wake of the global financial crisis, Serbia's successful hosting of the Universiade was hard to come by.

"Because of the economic crisis, there were a lot of things that they couldn't do," he said, adding that the organizers could have done better in the merchandise and promotion of the world's second largest sporting event behind the Olympic Games.

Shenzhen, which was awarded in 2007 the right to host the 2011 Universiade, has sent a 140-strong delegation to Belgrade to learn and will take over the baton when the games close on Sunday.

Killian said he expected the Chinese city to deliver a better Universiade.

"Shenzhen is gonna do a better job than Serbia, because they ( the Shenzhen observers) have seen the things here, they are not going to let them happen again," he said.

With two days of competition left, China narrowly held onto the medals table lead thanks to a string of strong performance in diving, table tennis and gymnastics.

The chief of the FISU thanked China for sending a strong team to the Universiade.

"We love it when you send your best athletes here to our games," he said, referring to the likes of Olympic champions Cheng Fei and Zhong Man.

In stark contrast, there is a lack of elite athletes on the U.S. delegation, for which Killian blamed the U.S. government.

"It's the fault of the U.S. government. Our government does not give one cent to student athletes," said the 85-year-old American, who had previously headed the U.S. delegation to three Universiades.

"We have the strongest university sport program in the world. But all of that is done locally, it's done at the university. It's difficult to get universities to still provide fund for that ( taking part in the Universiade)."

Despite the absence of top student athletes like swimming sensation Michael Phelps, Killian insisted the competition at the Universiade is top level.

"Sometimes we have Olympic champions come here, but they got beat, which shocked them a little bit," he said.

Shenzhen is a city of sub-provincial administrative status in southern China's Guangdong province, situated immediately north of Hong Kong. Owing to China's economic liberalization from the policies of reformist leader Deng Xiaoping, the area became China's first - and ultimately most successful - Special Economic Zone.

Shenzhen's novel and modern cityscape is the result of the vibrant economy made possible by rapid foreign investment since the late 1970s, when it was a small fishing village. Since then, foreign nationals have invested more than US$30 billion for building factories and forming joint ventures. It is now reputedly one of the fastest growing cities in the world.[1] Being southern China's major financial centre, Shenzhen is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange as well as the headquarters of numerous high-tech companies. Shenzhen is also the second busiest port in mainland China, ranking only after Shanghai.

Shenzhen will be the host city of the 2011 Summer Universiade.

Universiade Torch and Medal

Apparently each piece in the torch can be rotated so the torch will have infinite shapes
