Flushing: Smallest skyline of the Netherlands

Vlissingen (Flushing in English) is a city with a population of 45,000 in the southwest of the Netherlands, Europe. It was granted city rights in 1315. The Flushing neighborhood in New York City's borough of Queens was named after Vlissingen.

Vlissingen has a small cluster of highrises along the sea-side boulevard, the highest apartment tower is 85 meters (280 feet). Not very impressive but the skyline views from a distance are quite good. The photos also show the dunes that protect large areas from flooding.

All photos taken 9 Oct 2009 and 18 Oct 2009.

1. Skyline on the horizon.

2. North Sea.

6. Sea protection works, here dredging is used to replenish sand on a stretch of beach.

9. Vlissingen's sea-side boulevard with at the right the Prison Tower built in the 15th century.

11. All ships to the Belgium port of Antwerp sail through this stretch of water.

12. Warning sign on Vlissingen beach.

15. In this area the dunes that protect the low-lying land from the sea are narrow and high.

16. The low-lying countryside behind the dunes.

19. Nice small skyline, isn't it?

21. German bunker from World War II in a small forest behind the dunes.

22. Anti-tank barrier built by the German occupiers in World War II.

23. Paragliders take-off from the tall dunes.

26. Looking down from a steep and tall dune, about 50 meters high (165 feet).

Very nice. I like the roundish tower. The dunes are probably the highest mountain range in the Netherlands. Is that correct?
Isaiah 28:2
Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.

Matthew 7:25
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Interesting place. It has a better skyline than cities with 10 times that population here in Mexico.

Wichtige ─nderungen beginnen immer mit ganz neuen Perspektiven.
