August 18th 2010, by Alastair Craig, Evening Chronicle ![]() PIGEONS are set to be evicted from the empty shell of a Tyneside landmark to make way for a luxury hotel. International developers have now won planning permission for the £20m Hotel Indigo in Newcastle city centre. And builders are due to start work in January to have the venue finished for a grand opening by Christmas. The famous Eagle Star House building, in Fenkle Street, was chosen to tap into Newcastle’s growing reputation as a cultural hot-spot. The Hotel Indigo group – which is part of the world chain InterContinental Hotels – targets some of the greatest cities, and already operates in Shanghai, in China, New York and the Greek capital Athens. And the new 148-bed, four-star complex, next to the city’s Assembly Rooms, is expected to create 80 jobs for local workers. The hotel is being developed by Sanguine Hospitality Management Company. The firm’s managing director Nick Taplin said: “We looked at six sites in Newcastle, and the Eagle Star House blew us away. It’s an incredible space. “The city is such a fantastic place to visit and we feel that we can create a top-class boutique hotel to rival any in the area. “The quality and friendliness of the people attracted us as well. The standard of service they will offer will be excellent. “In other areas of the country you have to train staff to be as friendly as the people in Newcastle, but it’s all here for us. Marco Pierre White confirmed to open Newcastle restaurant in Hotel Indigo
by Alastair Craig, The Journal, June 11th 2011 REVERED chef Marco Pierre White is set to bring his culinary genius to the North East for the first time. The fiery former Hell’s Kitchen star has confirmed that his latest eatery will become the focal point of Hotel Indigo Newcastle, the new £14m boutique venue expected to open in Fenkle Street early next year. Work on the hotel is due to start shortly at the former Eagle Star House building next to the Assembly Rooms. The Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill will be the 49-year-old’s first foray into the region. The 120-seater restaurant will offer a private dining area, bar and lounge in the heart of the city’s hospitality district. The Journal first revealed that the top chef was in discussions about developing an eaterie as part of the new hotel in February. With 148 bedrooms planned, the four-star Hotel Indigo will be operated by Sanguine Hospitality Ltd and is expected to create more than 50 full and part-time jobs. Last night Michelin-starred Marco praised Newcastle’s cultural reputation and has vowed to create one of the city’s best eateries. He said: "Newcastle is a wonderful city, renowned as a relaxed, friendly destination where people can express themselves. The restaurant aims to reflect that culture by offering somewhere for friends and family to gather in comfortable surroundings and enjoy simple food, cooked perfectly. Work starts on £14m hotel
Last updated: Fri 1st July, 2011 at 08:52am Work is underway at a new £14m hotel development in Newcastle city centre. Denizen Contracts has moved on site at Hotel Indigo Newcastle on Fenkle Street, next to The Assembly Rooms. Contractors have started work on the refurbishment and fit-out of the four star Hotel Indigo and Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill. The 40-week build programme involves work on the 148-bedroom hotel, followed by the 5,300 sq ft (500 sq m) restaurant. The development, which will be operated by Sanguine Hospitality, takes advantage of the Business Premises Renovation Allowance (BPRA). The scheme has been headed up by Downing Corporate Finance. The hotel from InterContinental Hotels Group is set to open in early 2012. The restaurant will be Marco Pierre White's first venue in the North East. They've just started building a Hotel Indigo yards away from my house in York. Should do wonders for the area round here too, though what the hotel guests will make of all the junkies who hang around outside I don't know!

Hotel Indigo Newcastle director
hopes hotel will boost tourism by Liz Lamb, The Journal, July 16th 2011 THE director of a hotel chain set to open a new £14m boutique hotel believes the venture will boost tourism in the region and create around 60 new jobs. Nick Taplin, managing director of Sanguine Hospitality, the owner and operator of the new Hotel Indigo Newcastle, was speaking on a visit to the development site in Fenkle Street, in Newcastle city centre. ![]() ![]() ![]() The hotel chain is linked with InterContinental Hotels Group, a worldwide network of upmarket hotels and resorts. It will feature a restaurant fronted by celebrity chef Marco Pierre White. “There’s a big gap in Newcastle for this type of hotel and a big gap in the market for the restaurant as well,” said Mr Taplin. “We are going to make a mark in Newcastle and we are going to up the ante. “The tourism it will bring into the city will be massive. Our link with Intercontinental means its customers will be coming to Newcastle and spending money here in the cafes, bars and shops and fans of Marco Pierre White will also be coming to the city to go to his latest restaurant. “It’s going to be the place to be.” The hotel group will transform the former Eagle Star House building near to the Assembly Rooms. The Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill will be a 20-seater restaurant offering a private dining area along with bar and lounge. ![]() The 148-bedroom hotel will also offer hotel suites and feature a rooftop apartment with stunning views over the city. Mr Taplin is a huge fan of Newcastle and was keen to introduce the Hotel Indigo brand into the city. Read More - http://www.journallive.co.uk/north-e...#ixzz1SGkHwkOE |

The official Indigo web site is a wee bit optimistic mentioning the fact that it will be open in the Summer of 2011 - http://www.hotelindigo.com/h/d/in/1/...DetailHit=true
However I see they have added this under Hotel Highlights: OPENING SOON! The Hotel Indigo New Castle is opening in 2nd quarter of 2012. Don't you just love the spelling of Newcastle

There hasn't been too much to see at this hotel but the covers are coming off a little to reveal..... Looked in vain for Marco Pierre White though!
![]() ![]() ![]() The hotel is on Fenkle Street next to the Old Assembly Rooms but over the road is the back of the 02 Academy music venue with a lot of night time activity, tour buses and litter so we shall see if it a popular hotel. More jobs hopefully on the way. |

What on earth is the point of those blue fins..? They may cut out a bit of sun to stop the rooms overheating, but why are they only on some windows and not others?
Not impressed yet... |
