Germany's oldest city: TRIER

Today morning I took some pictures around the Hauptmarkt (Main Market Square) of my home city Trier. As the title says, it is the oldest city in Germany (founded 16 before Christ on a Celtic settlement) and historically one of the most important in Europe. It was once one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire.
Although Trier's Roman monuments (which are UNESCO World Heritages sites) are it's main attractions, I'll stick mostly with the beautiful medieval timberframed/Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassicist houses of the city. At least with part one of my picture series.
Please enjoy!

Part 1:

Seeing all those beautiful old buildings, you would never guess, that Trier was, as many other German cities during WWII, heavily bombed and destroyed to more than 40%.

Honestly, there are also quite numerous eyesores within the city center Fortunately not on the main streets (except the ugly Kaufhof Building in the Fleischstraße)

The Hauptmarkt is indeed one of the most beautiful squares I have ever visited. Maybe only a small tree or something is missing

Can't wait for Tuesday, I'll be back in Porta-Town then, the city where I have lived for 2 years

Thx for this thread, Tiaren, and refreshing my image of Trier

I can agree with that. Trier was the first German city I've ever visited and I was delighted. We stayed there for a week and loved to explore the many historical buildings and the beautiful countryside around town. The river, the hills and the vineyards were great in autumn!
Thanks for sharing your pics!

Beautiful photos. I know a little of Trier's history - about the Roman Empire and the city gate. But I have not seen these beautiful scenes.

Hey, it's you! Thanks! You didn't have to revive this thread from the dead.
Man, I was so annoyed with some of the guys telling me, Germany's city aren't attractive anymore, second rate, less than 50 years old and whatever... D:

A great city in, IMO, the most beautiful region in Germany! Was there on my way from Koblenz to Luxembourg, 4 or 5 years ago. Really unforgetable memories!!!!

I saw your comments about Trier and I did a search for it on the forum. This is what came up.
