- Good job that you started a thread on Kochuveli, mmmcet. It was long overdue, after all when finished this will be the biggest (10 platforms) and busiest station in Kerala, overtaking Trivandrum Central.

However, I do suggest that you prune images which are very similar to each other so as to make the thread as compact and readable as possible.

Also, request the Mods to edit the thread's name to Kochuveli Satellite Railway Terminal | U/C as per forum guidelines.

The Terminal began its operations on 30th March 2005 when Kochuveli-Hazrat Nizamuddin Kerala Sampark Kranti Express was flagged off.

THE city's second railway terminal at Kochuveli formally started operations today when the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, flagged off the Kochuveli-Hazrat Nizamuddin Kerala Sampark Kranti Express.

The Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr R. Velu, who presided over the function, said the establishment of a satellite terminal at Kochuveli will relieve the pressures on the Thiruvananthapuram Central Station, which has no room for expansion. Henceforth, long-distance trains from and to Thiruvananthapuram could operate out of the Kochuveli station based on requirements, he added.

Glad to know that so many long distance trains are operating in and out of Kochu veli terminus. Btw why is the progress of expansion works (with the ultimate aim of having 10 platforms as Ajay has stated in his post) very slow? Is it because there are issues associated with land acquisition or is it because the railway board is not allocating sufficiet funds. I am not sure if the speedy development of this all important project is getting the attention it deserves inspite of having a malayali as a minister of state for railways in the central government

Fund allotment as well as land acquisition could be the issues. The proposal for 10 platforms came three years back.

Five platforms need to ready by second phase of development. I am not sure how much of the sanctioned 22 crores were allotted. Anyway it mentioned that in 2006 budget, 1 crore was allotted.

Rs. 22 crore sanctioned for development of Kochuveli

Thiruvananthapuram: The Railways have sanctioned Rs.22 crore in the supplementary budget for the second phase development of Kochuveli coaching terminal into a "model station" with all modern facilities.

This was disclosed by General Manager of Southern Railway Thomas Varghese on Wednesday at Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station after carrying out detailed inspection of the Kochuveli terminal with top officials to finalise the plans for the second phase development.

Mr. Varghese said the railways have plans to construct 10 platforms and supporting infrastructure facilities such as stabling lines and pit lines at Kochuveli to take care of the handling of long distance mail and express trains that reach the State capital from various cities. A sum of Rs.1 crore was sanctioned for the second phase development of Kochuveli in the current Union Railway Budget.

The development of the coaching terminal is being taken up soon as the Central railway station is saturated and the railways cannot handle any more trains.

The General Manager said land needed to be acquired for the second phase development of the terminal. The acquisition of private land near the coaching terminal would cost Rs.4 crore. The railways has decided to start the work for the terminal as it would need a minimum of three years for the completion of the second phase development. Initially, the railways would take up the construction of five platforms, three pit lines and three sick lines at Kochuveli, he added.

@arunjsamuel, a Satellite Terminal means that it would be a 'satellite' for the main station Trivandrum Central, for operating long distance trains.

Just like there is Hazrat Nizamuddin for New Delhi, Yeswantpur for Bangalore Central, Kochuveli is for Trivandrum Central.

Meanwhile we have to get the name changed as Trivandrum Kochuveli to be more sync with Trivandrum Central (TVC) and Trivandrum Pettah (TVP). The present code of KCVL can be changed to TVK. I had written to SR way back in 2005 or so requesting for this, but got reply that the State Government has to request for that. TDF guys, hope you will take up with Minister Mr. Vijayakumar.

Thiruvananthapuram: Elevated platforms to avoid congestion, nine-storey station building with waiting hall, big concourse and 11 platforms are the highlights of the master plan worked out for the development of the Kochuveli Railway terminal.

The master plan, prepared by the Thiruvananthapuram Railway division and estimated to cost Rs.80 crore, has been submitted to the Railway Board for approval, a top Railway official told The Hindu .

The master plan has been prepared keeping in mind the needs of the Railways in next two decades.

A sum of Rs.15 crore would be needed for the acquisition of 29 hectares of land needed for the development of the terminal. The new station building at Kochuveli will cost the Railways Rs.1 crore.

Eleven platforms, 11 pit lines and 11 or 12 stabling lines to cater to the needs of maintenance of the rakes have been proposed. The new building would be on the city side of the existing Kochuveli station. The proposed station building will have a big waiting hall, reservation centre and a host of passenger amenities. The existing railway station building at Kochuveli would be converted into a service building.

The proposed 11 platforms would come up between the existing station and the road leading to the `English India Clays.'

Three platforms would be built at more elevation to cater to incoming trains. Three platforms will be at a lower level to cater to passengers of outgoing trains.

The eight-metre elevated platforms, first of its kind in the State, will help avoid the rush of passengers. The platforms would 10-metre in width and 630-metre long. This would help accommodate 26 bogies and 5,000 passengers.

The trains would deviate from near the Veli bridge to approach the proposed elevated platforms. The Southern Railway has taken up the matter with VSSC authorities to seek their opinion on the security angle, sources said.

The proposed pit lines, the authorities said, would not disturb the existing houses near the station building. Taking into account the future needs, 3.23 hectares has been earmarked for parking.

The existing road from near the `English India Clays' to Kazhakuttom-Inchivila NH 47 bypass would be widened straightened. The Railways will construct a road over bridge later to replace the existing level cross near the `English India Clays' to ensure the smooth flow of vehicular traffic.

Meanwhile, the division has forwarded the plan for the second phase of the development of the terminal to Southern Railway headquarters. After the approval, the plan would be forwarded to Chief Engineer (Construction).

Although 29 hectares of land is needed for the development of the terminal, the railways need three hectares immediately to commence work.

The immediate aim would be to construct three platforms, two pit lines, three stabling lines, three to four floors of the building and service facilities.

`Work soon'

Divisional Railway Manager S. Vijayakumaran said the work would commence soon once the approval is obtained from the Southern Railway headquarters. "Funds are at our disposal to commence work," he added.

At present, three weekly trains are being handled at Kochuveli terminal. The Railways will be able to handle 25 trains from the terminal when it is fully developed at a cost of Rs.80 crore.

In this picture, Netrvathi express is passing through the main line between Trivandrum Central and Kollam. The old Kochuveli station building is on the left of the train (not to be seen). There is one more line on the left, along the Platform of the old station where the Passenger/Local trains halt. The old station building is on the western side of the track, along the All Saints Jn-Thumba Road.

The new Terminal is on the right extreme, that is, on the eastern side. You can see a blue rake stationed, the terminal is after that. Both the station buildings are on the opposite sides of the track. The new Terminal is parallel to the NH 47 Bypass which is just 500m away.

The whole expanse would one day be making way for the 11/10 platform station with two entry terminals and a foot overbridge connecting both.

The old station on the All Saints- Veli Road. It would've been a boon for the passengers if the new platform on the Bypass side is connected to this station. We have more frequent bus services through this road and the station has better passenger amenities.

Sudheesh, I think your letter did create some ripples. India Rail Info denotes the station as Trivandrum Kochuveli, though the site is not affiliated officially to Indian Railways.

Trivandrum City service Volvo JNT 5 at 'KOCHUVELI' railway station.

The Garib Rath from Bangalore has just come and the bus got full load of passengers, who had not arranged for a pick up.

Full credits to the initiative by KSRTC/Govt of Kerala. There were announcements on the platforms regarding the bus service. And Policemen were seen telling passengers that this is a Govt vehicle and gets in you in 10 times cheaper than an autorickshaw.

Anyway I am happy that we can do it, there were hoards of Auto Rickshaw drivers outside who might have lost good fortune. Perhaps worried about the gun totting young Policemen.

KSRTC has coordinate the timings of this service with train arrival/departure timings. This is a commendable initiative and will bear more fruit as the frequencies of operation of trains at Kochuveli improves.

That is a good initiative. If Govt. agencies work together, many of people's problems will be solved. Hope other agencies related to infrastructure learn from this.

There are services from/to airport but i do not think that the bus timings are co-ordinated with flight timings . If they are co-ordinated with the domestic flight arrival/departure timings of domestic flights (from Chennai/bangalore/Kochi etc) may be the Volvo buses service will get good patronage. Also instead of going upto only vellayambalam/sasthamangalam if the Volvo services (co-ordinated with flight timings) from airport are extended upto say Technopark that would be useful to travellers.

Babu, I had posted the pics of Volvo from Trivandrum Airport as well, in the 'India Transportation' thread in the Infrastructure forum. I shot these volvos after the gap of few minutes. I had landed in Kochuveli, and proceeded straight to Airport to book my tickets on King Fisher. (There was some issue when I tried booking online).

The services to Airport may not be in sync with flight timings. Anyway on last wednesday when I reached Domestic Terminal to catch my flight to Bangalore at 8.25 AM, a volvo also reached there, but nobody got out. there were a couple of passengers inside.

There are regular Volvo services to the Airport however due to the two reasons that TIA is close to the city unlike a BIA or HIA and that the JNNURM Volvos have no provision for baggage storage, unlike the "Vayu Vajra" Volvos of BIAL, the patronage is not likely to be high.

Accordingly, TDF has advised the Government and KSRTC to curtail these services and to run the buses only at those times of the day when the traffic to Shanghumugham Beach and the Airport are maximum. Instead, buses will now focus on Technopark and the key points within the CBD.
