Full credits to the initiative by KSRTC/Govt of Kerala. There were announcements on the platforms regarding the bus service. And Policemen were seen telling passengers that this is a Govt vehicle and gets in you in 10 times cheaper than an autorickshaw.

Anyway I am happy that we can do it, there were hoards of Auto Rickshaw drivers outside who might have lost good fortune. Perhaps worried about the gun totting young Policemen.
This is really a nice initiative.. I thought that the bus would be stopping in byepass itself.. But if it comes to the station, nothing like it.. Is this a new route starting from the station or is it a regular service taking a detour?

- Currently it is a dedicated service from East Fort to Kochuveli and back. It could be later made part of a route operating along the Bypass to Technopark.

Accordingly, TDF has advised the Government and KSRTC to curtail these services and to run the buses only at those times of the day when the traffic to Shanghumugham Beach and the Airport are maximum. Instead, buses will now focus on Technopark and the key points within the CBD.
The problem with baggage will be there only at the Intn'l terminal .. domestic passengers mostly arrive with light baggage that can be adjusted inside the low floor if some space is allotted to that in the bus. The bus administrators must study domestic flight schedules to optimize operational frequency of these volvos.

not true if you are travelling with family... and domestic flights cater to domestic tourists as well and most of them carry heavy luggage... this is what i have observed.

More Volvo @ Kochuveli

Was on the same train as Sudheesh, travelling from Ekm to Trivandrum. The Volvo is there whenever a train arrives, so plan to use it next time you arrive at Kochuveli. I sure will.

New rail line from Tvm Central to Kochuveli
Source: http://www.hindu.com/2010/04/17/stor...1762510300.htm
Quote:

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A third railway line will be laid between Thiruvananthapuram Central and Kochuveli by the Railways as part of the plan to decongest Thiruvananthapuram Central and to handle more express and mail long-distance trains in the station.

Disclosing this at a press conference here on Friday, Divisional Railway Manager Rajiv Dutt Sharma said the third line along the seven-km stretch from the Central station to the satellite terminal at Kochuveli had also been mooted in view of the delay in commencing the proposed operating centre at Nemom.

The rail overbridges en route to Kochuveli — Overbridge, Upidamoodu, Pettah and Chaka — have adequate space to accommodate two more railway lines. Mr. Sharma said a detailed survey had to be carried out as land acquisition would be involved on the other stretches passing through the city.

The proposal is to close down two three pit lines at the Central station and to construct platforms for receiving and dispatching trains. Instead, in addition to the two pit lines coming up and the existing one in Kochuveli, another one will be constructed. Mr. Sharma said the trains that terminate at the Central station would be taken to Kochuveli through the third line for coaching activities.

Signalling system

An intermediate block section, a signalling system, had also been proposed at the Pettah railway station to ensure that the trains do not get halted at the outer of the central station. In addition, the Railways will be able to handle two trains on the Pettah-Thiruvananthapuram Central stretch at a time.

Mr. Sharma said as the existing 12.14 hectares of land with the Railways at Nemom is a triangle, another 28.33 hectares of land has to be acquired along the railway track for setting up the operating centre. “We have already written to the State for acquiring land and the master plan has been forwarded to the railway headquarters,” he added. The proposed operating centre will be modelled on the lines of the Railway's Basin Bridge Coaching Depot in Chennai. The Railways are planning 10 pit lines to take care of the maintenance of 30 trains; 12 stabling lines; sick lines and quarters for railway personnel at Nemom.

The Divisional Railway Manager said the line capacity had crossed 100 per cent in almost all places.
Cheers!!!

Volvo ride from Kochuveli. It was waiting for the Bangalore - Kochuveli train. From Kochuveli to Thampanoor the ticket rate is just Rs.22/-. Compared to the auto charge(Rs.120/-) this is much cheaper and more luxury. The photo will tell the rest. .

Similar services should be started from Trivandrum Central (East and West Sides) and Petta Railway Station as well for passengers arriving by executive trains(Janashatabdi,Parasuram and Venad) .

That will only be possible when the bus fleet is large enough to handle additional routes. Today, with just 8 buses, only one bus operates on most routes which means the frequencies are extremely poor. Possibly when we have 20 Volvos running on the roads of Trivandrum, we can look at more routes.

In fact, TDF has suggested that every possible route should consider Trivandrum Central as a node. That seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

Some big shed is u/c on the road to the NH Bypass side. This is shot from the All Saints-VSSC road.

It seems like a LOCO SHED or Coach Care Centre.

- Probably more chance of it being a Loco Shed than a Coach Care Center. Despite being Kerala's busiest rail terminus, Trivandrum currently only has a trip shed. Considering that over 50 trains originate from Trivandrum daily, there is a significant need for a facility to service and repair electric locos. Currently, this can be done only at Erode.

Additionally, there is a full-fledged Coach Care Center present at Trivandrum Central, which is supposed to shifted to and expanded at Nemom.
