The notification says that the name is changed from "SUBURBAN RAIL TERMINUS " to Vikram sarabhai rail terminal. Never knew that Kochuveli was named as "Suburban rail terminus" .

Does n't it sound a bit strange? Railway stations to my knowledge are not usually named after personalities (except of course for some rare exceptions such as Vallathol nagar;even here i suspect that vallathol is the name of a place though it is famous because of it's illustrious son )

There is no need to name Kochuveli Terminal after Vikram Sarabhai.
Of course he is an eminent scientist in the field of space science and the city /country have named the world renowned space research institute in his name, the best we can do for him.
Giving his name for the railway station doesn't make any sense . If at all renaming the station there are a number of personalities who deserve that.Don't know who's idea is this.

Jeez, this makes it even more difficult for people to realize that this station is in Trivandrum!

I am ready to accept this name change (of course with a lot of reluctance) if this new name after the renowned scientist can lead to the elevation of the present pathetic station to international standards with all modern amenities.
Otherwise it is a sheer waste.

Cheers!!!

i feel the official name (as per railway records) would remain as kochuveli only, just like "lokmanya TIlak Terminal" at Kurla mumbai..

IMHO,The Kochuveli Terminal has been christened rather inappropriately.

Previously,it provided a clue as to the whereabouts of the place, however minute that was. Now,booking counters are going to witness dreary days as travellers scramble to know where this "Vikram Sarabhai Rail Terminus" is.

Sorta like pasting a rather pompous label like "Chardonnay" on a rather ancient and ill manufactured cask of wine !!

Kurla Lok Manyatilak Terminal is coded as LTT in www.irctc.co.in for ticket booking purpose. Likewise, Kochuveli coded presently as KCVL may undergo change.

Hahaha...true...
all "hindi speaking" people wud tell VST Thrivemdram or Thrivendram o wat eva... LOL
but i think it is a right move to rename. Vikram Sarabhai is one among those very important people who took our city on to lead as the "space hub" of the country. Though they ve missed out many names in the discussion, i feel the person rightly deserves such a respect.
earlier the city corporation had suggested renaming of the airport terminal as sree chithira thirunal terminal or SCT intl airport (correct me if i m wrong, dont remember if it was only for a terminal or for the airport as such), i feel even tht is much deserving, for he was the person who gave land for setting up one of the first airports in the country...

definitely..that should have done initially....chithira thirunal maharaja built the small airport at shanghumughum in 1930s which has developed into present TIA. Had he not shown that foresightedness, we would not got an int'l airport that too within the corporation limits within 10 min drive from city. TIA should be renamed Sri Chitra THirunal Int'l airport.

I would prefer "Travancore International Airport", for the simple fact that nothing is named after the region in general, and also as a tribute to the former ruling family. And the IATA code can remain "TRV"

As long as the official name includes the word Trivandrum in it, I don't care if anything is named after Santa Claus! Having people names alone will cause needless confusion.

Name of station not changed yet

Source: Kerala Kaumudi Print Edition 23.12.2011

Railways has indicated that the name of Kochiveli will remain as it is. They have seen the name change through media, but the authority to change the name is with Railways. Until orders are issued by higher authorities, the name will remain as "Kochuveli"

Railways proposal to change name of Kochuveli to Tvm North and Nemom to Tvm South under consideration, says Shri Aryadan Mohammed, minister. KL assembly has to approve this change in name, as per minister.
