Tyne Shipping and the Port of Tyne
This thread is for discussion about Tyne shipping - ferry routes, cruise liner visits, freight ships, port expansion and other associated developments and news - for instance offshore industries and shipbuilding (r.i.p.). Since this subforum covers south northumberland we may as well include discussion about Blyth's port if anyone is interested in that.
I'll start us off with some news that Tyne Dock, once the busiest single dock in the world, is being filled in: Quote:

"As a result, Tyne Dock will close on 10th August after 150 years. The dock was opened in 1859 after being dug out by hand to provide enough berths for 500 vessels. George Stephenson, the son of the railway pioneer, made the dock gates and William Armstrong made the engines to open the gates which were still in use until about 20 years ago."
Very sad, though the dock is already half filled in. Northumberland Dock, too, has been filled in; now the only dock left on the Tyne will be the Albert Edward Dock, and that a marina. |

yes it used to be a lot bigger and had rail staithes jutting out into it for the unloading of coal. I believe a small part of northumberland dock is still there but it can't be used anymore.

what an impressive picture! and look how huge northumberland dock is there - would have no idea from the small opening that remains today that it used to be so gigantic.

Just to put into context how big the Golden Spring is, it's 3m longer than the huge Maddelena D'Amato Hollow Man posted on the previous page.
Here's a pic by Neil McBride taken yesterday as it docked on the Tyne.

yeah, and if you think about it, the esso and tyne pride ships that were built on tyne would absolutely dwarf if too. these are all panamax ships, however post panamax ships wouldn't fit into the Tyne.

The Astral Ace: where's the other half of it? It looks like it's been sliced down the middle. Very odd shape.
