More great Tyne pictures Steve - there are certainly a variety of big working vessels coming and going!
I enjoy seeing the working ships coming to the river as well, after all this is a working river.

No pictures from me as the Baltic Ace went outbound from the Tyne at 02.55 this morning and entered the Wear at 05.25.

The ship left at about 13.00 this afternoon but as yet haven't seen any photographs.

From what I hear this will not affect the capacity of vehicles being handled by the Tyne.

Indeed it is an the OGN built rig for the Forties Field is the next 'spectacular' to be seen on the Tyne. The jacket (legs) has already been moved onto a barge and is expected to be towed out to the North Sea in August 2012.

With shipbuilding gone 1000 men building a 12,000 ton oil rig is the closest we've got to the ship launches of the past.
I hope it gets good coverage in the local media.

Of course the Tyne isn't all about 'Big Ships', we also have an active fishing industry down in North Shields, the biggest prawn landing port on the east coast of England.

One business that has arisen from a fishing industry background is Sanrene Guardships which has three former fishing trawlers which it uses to provide security services for wind farms, oil installations and cable laying. Basically what the guard ships do is to warn off vessels that are getting to close to the workings.

This is one of the boats - ENTERPRISE – Danish Seiner now converted into a Guard Ship and owned by Sanrene Guardships @ http://sanreneguardships.com/fleet.html.

She is the former NIKKI-NETTE – L304.

Asa/Gaia on the Tyne

A great day on the Tyne today in bright and breezy weather on the quayside.

The ship was built in Norway in 1990 and is 24 metres long and 12 tonnes of oak.

ITV Tyne Tees reported the name originally as the Gaia but today it had changed it to the Asa?

Didn't get down early enough to see it up close but have added some pictures of it moored at HMS Calliope.

In addition is the support vessel Next Wave was moored just below the Millenium Bridge.

Last night (Sunday) on BBC2, one of those Extreme Engineering/MegaStructures type shows was about refurbing ships, and its key focus was a ferry being worked on at A&P. Not exactly local interest, but nice to see a docu centrered around the engineering skills still being used on the Tyne

Fascinating insight and it the program can be seen on the BBC IPlayer @ http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/b01llr67/

Thing that started to niggle was the persistence in the mention of the work being undertaken in Newcastle when in reality it was in Hebburn.

Company history from the firms web site @ http://www.scsbulk.com/about_us.htm

Stephenson Clarke Shipping Ltd is the oldest British shipping company. King George II had been on the throne of England for just three years when the brothers Ralph and Robert Clarke purchased an interest in a 300-ton sailing vessel. The year was 1730 and their limited trading activities were to develop during the next 270 years into the present Ship Owning and Ship Management business of Stephenson Clarke Shipping Limited.

Sons of the Reverend Ralph Clarke, a vicar of Long Benton , near North Shields, the two brothers took up seafaring Careers, becoming master mariners. They began buying shares in ships, in this way gradually establishing themselves as Ship Owners, although they also continued to serve at sea for some time.

Robert Clarke had two sons, John and Ralph. The former married Jane Stephenson, of North Shields, in 1775 and moved to London , where he was later joined by his brother to carry on the business of Ship Owning and coal factors. Thus were laid the foundations of the present shipping organisation.

Nowadays we operate a fleet of modern single deck bulk Carriers, ranging in size from 1100 dwt tonnes to 12000 dwt tonnes. These Vessels have been designed for ease of loading and discharging with large open hatches and holds. We also operate several small self load/unloading vessels of between 1250 dwt - 2800 dwt, these vessels are fully self sustained with excavator and bob cat.

We now carry a wide range of bulk cargoes including aggregates, alumina, grain, coal, fertilisers and steel. The open hatch configurations make the vessel suitable for project cargoes.

Though most of the fleet can trade world wide, we tend to trade mainly within Northern Europe, the Mediterranean (incl Black Sea), West Africa, the Atlantic Islands , Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea . We concentrate on keeping the fleet in these waters so that we can cover with confidence the tight loading dates required by some of our contract partners. We usually have a ready supply of tonnage to cover charter requirements in these areas.

KEN
Ken - I was just a little east of you at Western Quay, this one is off to the former Swan Hunter Wallsend Yard to load a cable reel.

More the better Ken, as I'm not always able to get down to the water front

I was listening to an interesting program on Radio 4 about the new London Shipping port being built in the Thames at a cost of £1.5Bn which is intended to stop shipping traveling North of London....

Does anybody have an idea what are the busiest shipping ports in the UK and where the Newcastle and Sunderland ranks with them?

Newcastle shipping firm goes into liquidation

by Sonia Sharma, Evening Chronicle Aug 8 2012

Newcastle-based Stephenson Clarke Shipping Ltd, which was formed in 1730, has gone into liquidation with the loss of nine jobs.

The firm, a bulk cargo ship operator, says the economic downturn had a major effect on business and the market was “one of the worst experienced for many years”.

Over the last two years, the company tried to reduce its costs and sold its fleet of vessels.

Eventually, with no improvement in sight, a decision was made to wind up the firm and Tait Walker, of Newcastle, were appointed as liquidators.

A spokesman for Stephenson Clarke Shipping said: “It is with great regret the company has had to cease trading.

“Management and staff have worked extremely hard to manage the position to minimise the impact on stakeholders by working with professional advisers to ensure an orderly and controlled wind-down of the company, which resulted in the sale of the last vessel in July.
