Long-awaited $4 billion World Trade Center transit hub to open quietly
February 24, 2016

The Santiago Calatrava-designed hub, dubbed the Oculus, will not get a grand opening-day ceremony next week

When the World Trade Center transportation hub opens next week, it will be a quiet affair. According to Politico New York, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director Patrick Foye canceled the opening-day ceremony, stating that the Santiago Calatrava-designed hub, dubbed the Oculus, was a "symbol of excess." The Oculus cost $4 billion to build and took longer than anticipated to complete.

The New York Times speculates on why the Oculus, unlike the debut of other sites at ground zero, will not have a grand opening ceremony. One possible reason is Foye's decision to scrap the fanfare may be related to the fact that he was passed for the bistate agency's chief executive job last year

Opening Ceremony Back on for World Trade Centerís Transit Hub

Event to take place this spring despite some discord over whether to mark occasion

By ANDREW TANGEL
Feb. 25, 2016 9:26 p.m. ET

The World Trade Centerís new transit hub will get an opening ceremony after all.

After some apparent internal disagreement, the board overseeing the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the transportation agency will mark the train stationís opening with an event this spring.

The hub will partially open on March 3, with connections to New York City subway lines to open in coming months.

Taken Yesterday - 3.3.16

So yesterday I photographed some of the Oculus , I didn't photograph every entrance since most were restricted or confusing... I was ordered by 4 security guards and a police officer to stop photographing on the Platforms but managed to get a few shots while they were all yelling at me... When I brought up the Previous Supreme court case / ruling against the PA's Photo Ban in Bus Terminals. The officer said a Supreme court ruling in 1960 does not stand in 2016... Very Frightening to hear that....I don't think that's an isolated incident... I hear stories from time to time about PA cops who say Supreme court or NY court rulings do not matter to the PA...

My overall feelings about the Transportation hub... It feels sterile and an empty shell....now I know they plan on filling it with retail. But if Fulton and Brookfield are anything to go by , its not retail that the average commuter could afford. The retail and food in Brookfield and Fulton except for a few places is high end and out of reach of most people in this region... So the Transportation hub which is over budget will become a glorified Wealthy Mall.. The Passenger congestion on the platforms is dangerously high and the staircases are too narrow for the rush hr crowds... Its a joke of a station... 4.5 out of 10...

That train is between four and eight years old. Its hardly antiquated.

Hardly. Bear in mind that design began several years before it was introduced, so through-carriages were hardly standard at the time.

The grab-irons are there because PATH is still slightly entangled with FRA trackage.

The PA-5 still has to fit through 19th Century tunnels, and it manages to look good doing it.

It has digital destination signs, and modern seating, AC, and lighting. How exactly is it outdated?

Oh sorry , the stainless structure gives me a image of the 90s

I am wondering what will the next generation train will looks like , will it has a black face as other city's metro system do ? or more color on it's body ? smoother shape carriages ?

Right now they are looking at exercising the remaining options on the order for this car (the PA-5). A new design isn't likely for some time to come.

Includes an imbedded video, but there's a 'style guide tour' on the Yahoo! travel site about the recent WTC transportation hub if you click this Yahoo! Australia link

PATH Train Tour: World Trade Center Hub & Surrounding (NYC)

Quote:
-If you're on desktop PC, you have the option to enable annotation, to view details of some notable location in this video I added.
-The main hub "Oculus" was opened partially by the Port Authority of NY & NJ to the public on March 3, 2016 after years of being rebuilt, along with all other WTC Ground Zero buildings destroyed in the September 11, 2001 attack. The cost of the architecture/construction was about $4 Billion dollars. Which is over budget of what was originally lesser then that. Regardless, still more work to be done for it to be finished. In the future, connections will also be added for direct access to the MTA NYC Subway System (Fulton Transportation Center). Separate payment for transfers.
-A tour of the PATH platforms/train, as well the 9/11 Memorial site (North side water fountain), Freedom Tower (1 WTC), Bloomfield Place connector and a few other buildings and structures shown.
-Please be advise that while photography is banned on the PATH Rail system (as well as some PANY&NJ facilities), I was still able to grab photos/videos of it with caution as usual. I'm not sure if there is any ban in the Oculus, as I have heard some folks have had issues there. Hopefully things will sort out soon. Just use caution filming or photoing there and anywhere within PANY&NJ turf.

-Port Authority of New York & New Jersey ownes this complex, World Trade Center site, PATH Rail System and a few other buildings and some bridges/tunnels in the NYC/Northeastern NJ district.

I don't really get the purpose of those cantilevers at the two ends of the hall.

If you are talking about inside, those will be staircases once everything is finished.
