Paying closer attention, you can see how the station building (this is beyond the end of the actual platform) angles away from the current track alignment. This is to allow for the future plan to move the PATH tracks out so that there is room for a four-track RoW for Amtrak/NJT. That's good.

When the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad originally opened to Newark around 1910, it ran a couple of blocks to the North, and crossed the Passaic River on its own bridge to a terminal in Newark.

Between Journal Square and Newark (Manhattan Transfer), the H&M shared tracks with the Pennsylvania Railroad and its service to the old ferryboat station at Exchange Place.

In the 1930s, the Pennsylvania conducted its mainline AC electrification. Service to NYC started in 1935, and Newark Penn Station opened in 1938. As a result, the H&M moved its Newark terminal onto the current route.

Coming north out of the DOCK vertical lift bridges through Harrison there were four tracks for the PRR (which can still be seen in photos and in Satellite View). The outer two tracks continued on to Exchange Place with some commuter locals and some Long Branch trains that didn't change engines running through. The H&M merged into these tracks immediately after Harrison station. The inner tracks continued on to the Hudson River Tubes and New York City.

In the 1960s, this situation changed. Exchange Place closed in 1961, and the H&M became the only passenger service operating along this route. Then, in 1967, the Aldene Connection opened, closing the Central Railroad of New Jersey's Communipaw Terminal and re-routing all of its trains into Newark Penn Station. With all the non-exchanging Long Branch trains and CNJ (Raritan Valley Line) trains terminating here, a yard facility was necessary. The decision was made to have the yard lead take over the route of the old track leading to Exchange Place.

The opportunity was taken at this time to "disentangle" the now-PATH trains from conventional railroad services. The Manhattan-bound PATH track was moved onto a new alignment on the inside of the curve. The outbound track remained where it was, but the wires overhead were removed and the track connection leading into the main platforms at Newark was pulled up. Other alterations (such as the removal of overhead wires above the PATH tracks and closing the other connections) occurred at the same time.

This leads to the situation today where there are still two tracks leading to Manhattan, a single yard lead, and the PATH tracks where once two double track main routes diverged. The current plan is to move the Newark-bound PATH track to the outside of the curve and replace the mainline fourth track. In this new configuration, all four tracks will lead to Manhattan and the yard leads will branch off further away. There will be less concern about removing capacity for trains moving in and out of the yard as they terminate since more trains will be running into Manhattan.

In the third photo from the top, you can see the white signal box where the fourth mainline track used to be.

In the third photo from the bottom, you can see the four mainline tracks and two PATH tracks coming off of DOCK bridge.

The Trolley Museum at Kingston had a ceremony yesterday in honor of 9/11. PA-1 #143, the last car pulled out of the World Trade Center rubble, was opened to the public for the first time.
