Plea for photos

IMAGES from yesteryear are being sought for a charity calendar.

Old photographs of Monkseaton are needed for the Rotary Club’s 2011 nostalgia calendar, which will be sold to raise funds for local charities and good causes.

Club president Barbara Connors-Fowler said: “We would particularly welcome any information with regards to location, year taken, and names of any people in the photograph.”

Silence over Hexham bus station re-development, is ‘suspicious’

The public is being kept in the dark about a new development vital to Hexham’s economy, said two leading figures this week.

Hexham Civic Society chairman Tim Tatman and the town’s Mayor Coun. Terry Robson both criticised Northumberland County Council’s handling of the proposed redevelopment of Hexham bus station.

Despite its stated policy of community involvement, the council had so far failed to either consult with interested parties or provide the information requested, said Mr Tatman on Tuesday.

The situation was all the more worrying because the council had signed an exclusivity agreement with Newcastle-based development company Dysart in January that guaranteed the latter a year in which to draw up plans for the redevelopment.

Yet there had been no discernible progress, at least as far as the public was concerned, and no other developer was allowed to enter the arena until the year was out.

“The civic society has no objection in principle to the exclusivity agreement, but we are concerned about the lack of information being made available,” he said.

“The silence makes you suspicious and that leads to speculation.

“This is an absolutely vital site for Hexham town centre – it will have a big impact on the character and the vitality of the town.

“So I think that trying to hide things from the public in case they become excited about something that is only a developmental idea is seriously misjudging the public.”

Mr Tatman took the opportunity to promote a new exhibition that opens in Scott’s cafe at the Forum Cinema next Friday.

Repeating an exercise first carried out last year, a group of Newcastle University urban design students will display their ideas about what should replace the bus station.

This thread was set up to display 'old photos' from around the North East, but originally (as the first area chosen was South Shields) had 'South Shields' in the title.

It has not been used since it was set up in October 2009, and had actually slipped to '3rd from bottom' of Page 4 of the forum!

So, in order to 'revitalise' it, I have changed the thread title to more accurately reflect its originally stated intention.

I think this thread could be an excellent "companion thread" to the Historic Newcastle one . . .

Does anyone have any interesting old photos and postcards to post on here from around the North East /Tyneside area, from outside the City Boundary?

An excellent photo of Hexham Abbey and the bandstand in the nearby park, from 1937.

That area of the centre of Hexham actually hasn't changed much since 1937, it still looks much the same nowadays!

Another photo from www.picturesofgateshead.co.uk showing westoe village in south shields, which like the photo of hexham shows a very similar scene to today (although the parked cars somewhat spoil things nowadays)

and the plastic lean-tos aka conservatories (though all they conserve is condensation), and the defoliated gardens aka car parking, and the double glazing mounted forward of the original rebates.

We do seem very half-hearted in our interpretation of "traditional".

The second postcard is excellent, a pity it's all wonky cos the background of rabbitt banks is much clearer than the one above!

Yes, thats true, you can see all the same buildings etc, but it is MUCH clearer. Still, an interesting photo though, even if it is wonky!

Hasn't changed much, although the building to the right has obviously been changed from its Georgian appearance in the photo; to a more Victorian Gothic revival style. Also think the trees have been replaced from the traditional elm's, obviously due to disease.

I and a few others have said this on the Historic Newcastle thread a few times, but seeing some of the old pictures/photos on here (like the one just above, of a street in Westoe Village) just makes me wish I could 'travel in time' and just walk down those streets, as they were!!

A perfect 'continuation' of the photo before!

I also notice that, at the South end of the under-construction Gateshead Flyover, only two office blocks of the four (planned) blocks of the Tynegate Precinct, have been built.

"Chad House" (the one that would be nearest to Sunderland Road) is not even started yet, in that photo. It was the third (and last) to be built, and it was 'number 4' on the plan. Number 3 was never built, and there was always a gap there . . . still is!

It always seemed strange they decided to leave the 3rd block out .. and construct the 4th
