I read an article on this building on the Architectural Record magazine.I think it was causing some protest because of its height in an area of the city that is usually known for its historical buildings. As for the building it seemed better in the renditions than it does on those pics.

Really worth it to open a thread about a tower that is almost completed and is barely visible in the New York skyline?

Every highrise building under construction deserves a thread here.

Every highrise building under construction deserves a thread here. Besides, in its neighborhood, this one totally stands out.

I like it. In my city, we don't have the luxury that towers of this size would go unnoticed.

Trump Forest Getting Planted In Soho

January 4, 2010 By Pete

The Trump Soho is pushing forward towards its big opening date in February, and crews at downtown's controversial condotelium have been loading in trees and pavers for the hotel's mid-block smoking area Urban Plaza. This "landscaped outdoor garden with ambiance lighting" from Handel Architects extends along the east side of Ivanka's playpen, from Spring to Dominick Street. The seating areas could become a handy hangout for the high school kids who study across the way, if The Donald doesn't blind them all with Aqua Net. From this alley of urbanity Trump's guests will have views of a fittingly industrial loading dock to the north, and a parking lot to the south. They might be touting this Trumpalicious tower as "ultra-luxury," but just outside edginess and urban life abound.

Trump SoHo No Longer Opening February 1st

January 20, 2010
by MsRebecca

Remember when we got all excited that Trump SoHo had announced an exact opening date rather than giving us a vague “opening early 2010” or “opening Spring”, like so many other hotels? Well, scratch that. The hotel will no longer open on February 1st. Bummer.

First there was the lack of Trumpian fanfare that you expect to precede a grand opening, and then we heard from a reader that February bookings at the hotel would not be honored. What gives?

Trump SoHo’s general manger David Chase confirms that February 1st is no longer the opening date—and that at this stage no new date has been announced. Ivanka’s Trump SoHo Countdown contest is still running (you have until January 31st to enter) and the opening-party part of the prize still stands … whenever the party is rescheduled.

Chase is in the midst of hiring up to 380 staff and the hotel’s PR rep tells us that the site is a hive of activity:

We are swiftly moving forward—interior finishes are near completion, furniture is being delivered to guest rooms, chefs are perfecting the menus in the kitchen, and the hotel staff is actively preparing for opening.

Rooms are still starting at $599 on the hotel’s online reservation system for March 1st but apparently there will be a promotional rate of $399 available in the spring, based on availability.

We’d tell you that the latest spate of hotel delays can be attributed to something in the water, but truth be told this is just another day at the office in the Hotel Opening Tracking Game. Let’s hope Trump’s signature pomp and pride get this baby out of the gate sooner rather than later.

Welcome to Your Condo. Please Don’t Stay.

Terranea’s troubles may not bode well for the Trump SoHo, a 391-unit hotel and condominium building in Manhattan that is expected to open in April. There, owners will be allowed to use their units no more than 120 days a year and no more than 29 consecutive days in any 36-day period.

Rodrigo Niño, the president of Prodigy Network, which is marketing units at the Trump SoHo, said the use restrictions “shouldn’t be a problem because the buyers are from overseas anyway” and will use condos as second or third residences. The units are not time shares; they are being sold outright, at prices that start at about $1.2 million for a studio. But they may feel like time shares to buyers, who, after paying those prices, will be told they have to vacate after just under a month. A renter could move in for the rest of the year.

At the Trump SoHo, the occupancy limits are the result of a zoning dispute. The building is in a manufacturing zone, a designation that allows construction of hotels, but not permanent residences. After the local community board voted against the project, the Bloomberg administration negotiated an agreement to allow the condos, so long as there were residency restrictions that would help create a hotel-like environment.
