Look at Tokyo! Also, the closer the people are to eachother, the less the need will be for long distance transportation and 40km subway lines.

A city can be unbelieveably dense and still be highly liveable. I believe that with proper roads, transport, plumbing, utilities etc. The denser the better. (ie. Taipei, Hong Kong, Singapore) If the Shanghai government wants to pass liveability laws maybe they should pass a law that outlaws using a jackhammer at the foot of a (my)residential building at 6am on a Saturday. That would be nice

I have to say that im appreciative of density restrictions. I used to live in a 25 floored 1990s apartment in Hongkou. The apartments are so close together that i could literally see my neighbors in the opposite apartment having shower every night.

Also during SARS, everyone was freaked out because there was only two elevators for approximately 200 households in the whole building, and having close contact with each other in the elevator in the morning hours was inevitable. Just proving what Shera has said about maximum densities.

Now i live in Pudong's newly developed apartments. The buildings only consist of 6 floors with two families on each floor. There is HUGE green spaces and even a man-made river/lake in the central green park surrounded by the apartments.

I in fact liked living in Pudong, more fresh air and less dirt. Getting to the center of city has never been easier, metro station is only 1min away by taxi. Coming from New Zealand, i wouldn't mind spending 2NZD to save a 10min walk by going on a taxi to get to the subway station :p

Having sufficient green spaces between the apartments has really become the trend in pudong (maybe the whole shanghai) now too, people would prefer to live in an area with lower density.

The lower the density, the more attractive it is and the more expensive the apartment will be.

This is the other apartment right next to the Century Avenue, one of the first waves of modern apartments built in Pudong.

The skyline is insanely vast, with countless # of buildings. There are multiple skylines, and you can see also take a peek at one behind downtown, somewhere between those buildings on a plateau.

The above picture only covers downtown, a small portion of the aerial pictures that only show a part of Sampa.

Once again, it's up to you guys to decide on which is the world's biggest skyline, regardless of the claims of the thread's title.
