Residents in Manchester are being invited to an open day of the new £24m national BMX centre at Sportcity in east Manchester on Saturday 6 August.

Manchester City Council said the open day, running from 10am to 4pm, will provide the chance to preview the centre before it opens to the public from Monday 8 August.

During the open day, residents will be able to take guided tours, see BMX demonstrations on the new track and try out the BMX outdoor circuit, titled Go-Ride, as well as having an induction and a go on the new indoor track.

There will also be the chance to take part in taster sessions on the Velodrome track and an opportunity to do leisure rides around Philips Park and Clayton.

Eddie Smith, chief executive at New East Manchester, said: "The new BMX arena builds on the long-term legacy of the 2002 Commonwealth Games and adds to the world-class facilities that were established for those games.

"The arena secures Manchester as the home of British Cycling with a world-class facility for the community and elite athletes to use, gives Manchester the ability to host international BMX events and provides the British Cycling Federation with new offices for 200 staff. This investment continues to strengthen East Manchester's economic base along with raising the city's and East Manchester 's international profile."

Ian Drake, British Cycling's chief executive, added: "Today brings us a step closer to the completion of a fantastic training and competition facility which will aid the GB Cycling Team's preparations for London 2012.

"The centre will also offer the local community an opportunity to train alongside British BMX stars, inspiring future generations of riders and host new British Cycling headquarters. The complex is being built as part of the London 2012 legacy plan, a great example of the positive impact the Games are having on sport and communities outside of London."

Sheldon Philips, head of major regional events at the North West Development Agency, said: "The Agency has been committed to supporting the development of the centre, with an £8m grant provided. I'm delighted to see the BMX centre in all of its glory and look forward to seeing people from across the region making use of all of its facilities."

At the open day, residents will also be able to get information about the summer holiday programme of activity during the school break. A BMX club has already been set up at Ravensbury Community School.

Designed by Ellis Williams Architects, the facility is funded by Manchester City Council, contributing £8.55m, Sport England, £3m, and the European Regional Development Fund, which is managed in the region by the North West Development Agency.

The cost of the building itself was £19m with a further £5m spent on improving public realm, including a new bridge linking the National Cycling Centre to the new Metrolink stop.

The project team also includes the Manchester office of Curtins Consulting as internal structural engineering consultants and Sir Robert McAlpine as construction contractors.

The 110,000 sq ft centre will include a 2,000 seat arena, British Cycling offices, plus cycle shopping and café facilities when it officially opens later this year. There will also be an official unveiling of the British Cycling Hall of Fame as part of the Reg Harris Heritage Day on 27 August.

Did you happen to see whether they have opened the canal bridge for people to walk over? It looks about ready.

Thanks very much Johnny. We were suprised that it wasn't open. We cycled down from Droylsden to the Asda Metrolink stop expecting to simply hop over the canal bridge. It had temporary barriers at both ends but looks completely finished. The Arena side needs nothing doing at all, but at the Asda end there was a little bit of Metrolink construction still ongoing. I think they're just holding off opening it up while there's still workmen going about their business.

New BMX Centre: Words And Pictures

We take a look into the massive new Manchester sporting facility

MANCHESTER'S National BMX Centre has opened.

The new £24m facility, based at the National Cycling Centre in Eastlands, will host major BMX events and the country's top riders will be training there ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

But the centre isn't only for BMX World Champions like Shanaze Reade, it's for all Manchester residents to enjoy.

Kids and cyclists will be able to take advantage of the facilities and 2000 seat arena during discounted ‘pay and ride’ sessions in the evening and at weekends.

Confidential popped down on Monday night to see what was going on. We were charmed by the open attitude of staff who let us wander through into the main jaw-dropping indoor BMX arena.

In fact the accessibility to both the BMX track and the main cycling Velodrome was encouraging. The people here clearly want to make their sports attractive and appealing to the widest audience. They want you to not only look but also to do.

The stats are these. The new centre has 2,000-seat arena within a 110,000 sq ft centre that contains an indoor and outdoor track, offices for 200 staff, cycle shops and a cafe.The cost of the building was £19m, with a further £5m spent on improving the surrounding area.

There’s even a bridge over the Ashton Canal which announces entry to ‘the Velo Park’.

Mike Amesbury, Manchester City Council Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, has said: “The opening of the National BMX Centre is exciting. The world’s finest will train here, and young people from East Manchester will get the opportunity to use the facilities and aim for the highest awards in the sport of BMX.”

Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, has said: “It will be really exciting for the public to try out some of the cycling activities that will be on offer at the National Indoor BMX Arena. With National Lottery investment, the arena will be both a world-class venue for elite athletes and a local sporting facility for cyclists of all ages and abilities.”

Get across to Sportcity in East Manchester and take a look. The BMX centre is impressive and it’s in Manchester. Confidential can’t wait to get down there, have a go, maybe even hold an event for readers.

Open sessions for new riders to the track take place every day except Monday from 9am-11am, on Thursday from 4pm-6pm and on Friday from 5pm-7pm. Price: Manchester residents U16s £2, Adults £3.50, non-Manchester residents U16s £3.50, Adults £5. These may lead, depending on the abilities of the rider, to accreditation which in turn allows people to use the start hills.

Most of the security fencing has been removed from the canal side and it's now easy to step around it and walk up the ramp. It's still fenced off at the top of the ramp, so the bridge is still closed off, as is the path to Ashton New Road.

National Cycling Centre bosses strike deal with Olympics venue in London and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow

Manchester's Velodrome has signed a deal with Britain’s two new cycling centres in a bid to avoid bidding wars over future events.

Bosses at the National Cycling Centre in Beswick, dubbed the ‘gold medal factory’ after its role in Britain’s cycling successes over the past decade, have struck a deal with the Olympics venue in London and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.

Until this year, the Manchester Velodrome, built in 1994, was the first choice for elite cycling competitions as the top in the country. But London is currently staging the Track Cycling World Cup and officials north of the border will be keen to use their new venue before the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The National Cycling Centre was overlooked for events at the Olympics but will remain as the home of both Team GB’s athletes and staff. And it’s understood that, as part of the deal, top track events will be shared between the three venues. London 2012 chairman Seb Coe, minister for sport Hugh Robertson and Manchester council leisure boss Mike Amesbury welcomed the agreement. Mr Robertson described it as a huge boost for cycling in Britain. He said: “It will help us uncover new cycling talent, host world class events and promote the sport across the country, encouraging the next generation to take up cycling.”

Lord Coe said: “The signing of this agreement is a fantastic step forward for cycling in the UK with the goal of delivering first rate cycling facilities and programmes. The Velodrome in the Olympic Park will leave a legacy in East London, and with this agreement in place it is a great step forward to extend this legacy nationwide.” Coun Amesbury said: “The National Cycling Centre not only provides an excellent facility for elite athletes, but also caters for local grass-roots cyclists inspired by Team GB. This new agreement will allow us to build on our success in promoting cycling while continuing to host major cycling events.”
