JJ Gallacher`s Hotel | Newcastle | 77m | Withdrawn

The proposed JJ Gallacher's Hotel on Pottery Lane (77m tower plus lowrise residential elenent) was one of the most interesting proposals in Newcastle over the past decade. The application was withdrawn after the Tyne Gorge` report slammed tall buildings along the banks of the river.

That`s such a shame because it looked like such a good scheme.

So this would have been to the right of the redheugh bridge as you enter newcastle?

Looks really good... Doubt we'll see anything on that site for a long time either.

Yes, near the redheugh bridge. A real gateway position.

It wasn't rejected though as far as I know. The application was withdrawn after the tyne gorge report, which I don't agree with. I've always quite liked the idea of tall buildings along the banks of the Tyne. Around this time the Forth Banks tower was originally a 20 floor tower, but was downsized to 15.

To be honest, I'm glad it's not going up, I don't like it. It just seems to me to be a little vluger. It's one of those buildings that look great on a render, but are poor when they are built, like the NBS call centre in Cobalt, or the Northern Rock Tower at the regent centre.

I don't like it, and I know a few of us here would like to see a tall building in Newcastle, I too go along with that idea, but it has to be designed right for me, and this isn't. It looks like a steel/brick building with glass panles around it.

Those are some pretty sweeping comments you're making there from what is admittedly a pretty poor long-distance rendering.

Unfortunately I cannot find anything else. The first rendering I saw of that tower (which was in the application itself in 2003) looked a lot better. It's a bit difficult to describe how it looked other than being a roughly oval shaped building with a fancy roof. Trust me, this was a really well designed tower, although I'm not sure if the application was withdrawn due to the report or due to other unspecified reasons. No ammended, lowrise application was ever submitted to replace this one as far as I know.

there was another rendering taken from the Gateshead side of the river on Carey Jones' website, but it's been taken down now. I agree with Talisker, a very nice, slender modern tower that would've looked good in its location. better than a pile of rubble and overgrown dereliction, anyhow.

Ive got this render on my work PC I/ drive, but in the past when ive tried to insert an image it asks for a URL. Is there a way around this? It is a very different looking tower from the angle described, the glazed west face and slender aspect not shown on this render and alter its appearance dramatically.

If you 'right click' on the image on your work PC, then open 'properties', it should show you (amongst other things) the URL.

Just "copy" that and then "paste" it into the box on SSC (that appears as part of the 'insert image' process) then click "OK" - and you're done!

That should work.

You can't upload images into an SSC post .. If you only have the image on your hard drive then you will first need to upload it to an image hosting website such as 'flickr' or 'if you have one' your own website. Then you can grab the web 'url' and insert it into your SSC post using 'insert image'

Yes, I assumed the image referred to was already on a website (in which case what I said in my previous post works) but if it is not (and is just on a hard-drive, which I hadn't noticed you said!!) then you will need to do exactly what is said above. I use 'Photobucket', but there are others of course.

You could even upload onto facebook if you have it and the grab the URL from the uploaded image.

I use photbucket (whenever I need to), it's fairly easy.

Did this actually ever get submitted as an application? I always got the impression it was entirely speculative.

Yes it was submitted in 2002 I think, and I viewed it at the planning offices.
