Actually is over 1 million, but it's not a traditional metro area: central city + suburbs. It's more like a chain of independent cities each one, with their own downtowns and skylines:

Aside those, the 5 biggest cities in Londrina Metro Area (Ibiporã, Cambé, Rolândia, Arapongas and Apucarana) get impressive skylines by their own:

There are pictures of them on the 1st page of "Norte do Paraná - 80 Anos (1929-2009)", in my signature

Londrina (510 k)

Cambé (97 k)

Rolândia (57 k)

Arapongas (104 k)

Apucarana (121 k)

So, in terms of skylines, Londrina is in fact a 500 k city, not a 1 million one. Each one of the cities get their own core and skyline.

By including metros, you are also including a fair amount of other "cities" in these metros as well. Where do we draw the line? For the Northeast, I would consider Hartford and Providence to certainly be on the small side.
Providence MSA comprises the whole Rhode Island state plus Bristol County, Massachussetts. That's the official definition by US Census Bureau which uses very specific criterias for it. It's also part of the larger Boston-Providence CSA. Its downtown is actually a 1,600,000 city's downtown and not a 175k one.

^ Trust me, 1.6 million people have probably never been in Providence at the same time, ever. Bristol county has 500k people and employs just over 200k (not to mention children and the elderly who wouldn't work there). Providence employs 272k in the entire county. (county has 627k people, city 176k) Providence is just a larger city in the greater megalopolis.

For instance, Fall River in Bristol County has 91k people. In Rhode Island, Cranston has 81k, Pawtucket 73k, Warwick 85k. If Providence wasn't there, these cities would still exist! That's why it's called a megalopolis! All I'm saying is, these numbers can be deceiving. Providence may be the largest city in that 1.6 million person area, but it's not exactly the epicenter that metro statistics make it out to be. (not to mention many people actually commute from Providence to Boston!!!)

That's why today Boston and Providence are part of the same CSA:

Further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Boston

Like I said, the US Census Bureau uses quite strict criterias to create and to add counties in a metro area, based on the number of people who commute to the central county to work.

Providence is in fact a 1,600,000 people urban center (or part of a 7,400,000 one). You are saying few people in the metro area works on its Downtown, but that's true for almost all US metro areas.

Gold Coast is a totally separate city (although joined) to Brisbane. It has its own city council and everything.

When I saw this category, I was thinking cities like Springfiled, IL or Baton Rouge or Shreveport.
The City of Buffalo has only about 270,000 people now - the Metro area includes a lot of villages and cities, including the cities of Niagara Falls, NY and Tonawanda, Lockport, Lakawana, etc. - it encompasses 2 counties - Niagara and Erie.

But it sure brought a smile to my face when people are argueing that the place where I grew up is a "big" city!!! - I like to think so, too...

Rotterdam only has 600.000 citizens so on world scale it is very small but the skyline is great!

It is recommended that people post at the large size or smaller. If everybody posted at the original size, it would take some of us all day to download the photos.

Dongtan in South Korea has only 50,000 citizens but it has lots of towers over 150m, not to mention 4 buildings over 200m.

As far as I know, no other cities in the world have such a big and tall skylne with such a small citizens.
