But why would you set up there now knowing that in the not-too distant future the main rail line wouldn't pass through there anymore, you'd be at a disadvantage and may have to consider moving again at great expense?

You'd start looking elsewhere at places that would be on the line but still offer similar advantages that Cov offers now.

Friargate is dead.

Yup. In the past, towns that refused to have railways through them suffered economically. When you've got high speed trains with 1000 capacity bypassing the city, the old line is going to to slowly left to rot...

I think what we need to do is to get those parts on the WCML together to start a long term MAGLEV scheme to replace it. By the time it actually gets round to being done the technology will have matured and will blow HSR out of the water.

Come on guys, this is way off, and remember, we're still practically in a recession... you're a miserable bunch sometimes! :P

I wouldn't say miserable - more realistic.

The sooner we accept that this is going to have an effect the sooner we can plan towards minimising that effect.

HS2 is not going to replace the WCML - one of the busiest trains lines on the world.

Only a minority of people will travel between the West Midlands and the rest of the country on HS2.

Coventry isn't moving - it will still be an hour away from London by train.

The first train on HS2 won't leave Euston until 2027 - assuming everything goes to plan.

This won't make Coventry into one of those service station towns the American freeways killed off. Lets have some perspective here.

LOL... Coventry's been permanent recession since 1979.

It does make you wonder when you see plans submitted in 2003 being canned due to costs and lack of demand... long, long before the recession started...

Looks like DSG are doing something to the PC World store:

I wonder what this could be?

Hi folks,
Anyone have any recommendations for a good restaurant to go for a special birthday meal in Cov/Kenilworth/Leamington...

Normally I'd choose Millsys in Earlsdon, but they appear to have stopped doing modern style food and gone down the pizza/burger/steak route which doesn't interest me...

Anyone have any ideas? (No chains - type of food can be anything from curry to modern cuisine...)

Looks like they are combining PC World and Currys together into one unit.

Best meal I've had recently was at Vermillion in Rugby - don't know if that is within the geographical area you are looking at ?
http://www.vermillionrestaurant.co.uk/

Harrington on the Hill was quite decent a couple of years ago, but I haven't been recently
http://www.harringtonsonthehill.com/

Heard good reports from Petit Gormand in Kenilworth, but not been there myself
http://www.petit-gourmand.co.uk/kenilworth/

Hope these are some help !

All good suggestions. I've heard good reports from petit gourmand as well. Rugby is within the area, never really considered it, to be honest! Vermillions looks very good indeed.

Oh, Petit-Gourmand are in Coventry as well. Looks like the sort of thing The Gallyer in Earlsdon used to do a few years back.

Has anyone been to Raffles in Kenilworth?

That'll teach me to not actually read it.

It looks like they're turning it one of their "megastores"...

I don't shop there often due to their prices, but some of their offers are very, very good - and if you order online it's sometimes as cheap as any other retailer.

QCDA

There's an article in today's Guardian about QCDA - its chief resigned. Some not too flattering references to its relocation, plus the fact that it's likely to be closed down by tories or cut down heavily by labour - including another quango (Becta) also based in Coventry. They believe its days are numbered regardless of the election outcome.

Some interesting facts: they lost 70% of their staff during relocation, but are not having much trouble recruiting in Coventry as most of their staff are former teachers.

I've heard for a while QCDA is going to be shut down, but never seen confirmation.

Would be a disaster for Earlsdon Park and it's developer - a massive new build unoccupied almost before it's even finished. Plus if that were already built without a tenant, I'd guess anyone relocating here would choose there first as it's already built, so Friargate would lose another potential investor.
