What was the traffic volume in the days of the Soviet Union? Also, when was the sencond runway built? Did it really need it? I am a fan of Aerosvit and KBP. Looks as a better transit airport than what Budapest used to be when Malev flew to North America.

Regarding passenger traffic in Soviet Union, sorry I don't have this information. Hope that someone else will help you
With respect to the second runway - it's was built in 2001. The first runway was aging and needed serious maintenance, which was done after the opening of the second runway.
Aerosvit Family is really boosting transit traffic and has more routes to open. Likewise, another major Ukrainian carrier, Ukrainian International Airlines (UIA), is shifting to "transit strategy" also. In support of it, UIA is in talks of leasing long-haul airliners: probably 767 or 777.

To clarify, Boryspil has had two runways for a while. The first one looked quite different before it was completely rebuilt in 2001. The second one is set to be rebuilt in the next few years.

This is what the old runway looked like before it was rebuilt:

I have difficulty locating the source, but it was about 3 mln. Now it's roughly 3 times that.

In Ukranian section there was a clarification: 3,8 mln Departing pax. So more than 7 mln. Whuch is kinda hard to believe: in soviet time, Boryspil was actually less crowded than in summer 2008 and 2010 (when there were no terminal F, and traffic was almost 7 mln). On the other hand , there were no passport control and customs for travel within USSR.

Well, you didn't really make a mistake because the new runway was built in 2001. You just didn't mention that there was something there before.

I can see that DL axed Kiev which is not good news. One thing that I always wanted to know was, when did DL start Kiev and what was the traffic at that time? Was it like five years ago? Traffic around 4M? Correct me if I am wrong.. Thanks
