Avoid advertising in this section. This is not news, this is promotional nonsense and I don't want what are effectively "adverts" being put in a section that is meant to be neutral.

You can get away with this in the N&B section, but not here.

Windy weather cancels trains

The wind causes problems. All trains Linköping - Kalmar/Västervik are canceled today. According to a swedish train forum a tree fell over the railway in the Kalmar area. Buses will compensate the canceled trains.

Vikingstad Railway Station

Vikingstad pop. 2096 is located 13km west of Linköping.

The station building is made of bricks, this is a typical looking building for a small village in this area.
The station buildings look almost the same in Skänninge, Linghem and Kimstad.

Incoming train from Linköping heading for Motala.

I dont think the station building has any function for the railway anymore, there is a kiosk inside.

Free parking is essential for commuters.

The train capacity is reduced temporarily. One track is closed due to maintenance on the railway

On Instagram, MTR Express has published some information about the punctuality of their trains since they started operations.

MTR Express claims that of their trains, 85% arrived within 15 minutes of their expected arrival time, which drops to 75% when applying a 5 minute threshold. SJ's trains on Göteborg - Stockholm would have seen a 5-minute punctuality of just 62%. MTR claims that "close to zero" of the delays are caused by themselves.

While this is of course a bit of marketing by MTR, the low numbers actually surprise me. Is punctuality on the Swedish network really that low?

I am not surprised to be honest. The network is a mess.

I have come to see a delay of less than an hour as punctual. It is miserable, and I don't blame neither SJ nor MTR.

Those are disastrous numbers...

In comparison 98,8% of trains were on time in Estonia in 2014 (up to 5 min behind schedule).

Just today trains through Stockholm were stopped for 5 hours. A crack in a switch between Stockholm Central and Stockholm Södra [Southern] was discovered and took a while to fix.

The Swedish rail net won't be up to par for like 5 more years, maintenance is so back-logged it'll take years to get things decent again.

The tracks are mounted in Hallandsåstunneln/Hallandsås Ridge Tunnel/Scanlink (two tunnel sections of ~9 km.). However, the project will be finished in the end of this year as three new stations are still under construction in the area nearby.

There are a lot of vulnerabilities in the infrastructure. Lots of single track sections, lots of points for signal failure etc. This can cause massive knock-on effects across the entire network as it hinges on a few critical points. This is the disadvantage of being a large country with a small population trying to run what is, effectively, a rather extensive railway network. Maintenance has been put on the back burner and has been rather underfunded due to national politics, but recently this trend has reversed with additional funding allocated to help restore the railways. We'll have to see what comes of this in the future.

Sweden has the potential to run a very good network for a country with its population spread across such a large area, but is hampered by politics and underfunding. This results in the disastrous figures you see above for reliability.

The construction of the new Vega railway station in Haninge has begun.

The old Vega station existed until 1973 and then closed.

The station looks pretty good, but the sprawly suburb far away from the city that's going to go around it? not so nice.
