Interestingly both sets had been shortened by one car though.

As an avid trainspotter in my hometown Linköping I can say that double sets are not that common on the stretch Stockholm-Malmö aka "Södra Stambanan"

On the line Stockholm-Göteborg "Västra Stambanan" there are more double sets of the X2000 because of more frequent travellers, which results in a higher demand for long train sets.

Not so strange, since today there are both 6 and 7 passenger car trains available of the X2000 trains. The difference is that the 6 car trains don't have car 2 in it's formation, meaning that they have removed one of the first class cars. What was even stranger were that originally 14 of the trains were produced as a "regional" style train with only 3 passenger cars. Though the demand for these trains have forced them to be lengthened to the 6-7 car standard and used on more normal stretches.

Another note is that I have even been on ones that were running 3 sets coupled together between Gothenburg and Stockholm, it all depends on what capacity they need.

No advice, but here's an article in one Sweden's biggest papers about this whole mess:
http://www.dn.se/ekonomi/sj-salde-bi...om-inte-finns/
google translate it, should be fairly understandable.

The idea of a hyperloop train developed by Elon Musk may be a considerable option for connecting Stockholm and Gothenburg or Stockholm and Helsinki (via Åland islands)

A New Straight connection between Helsingborg & Stockholm

At the beginning of this year the news came. There is going to be direct trains from Helsingborg to Stockholm beginning on Monday December 14th. The departure time is 06:42. The X2000 train goes to Stockholm via Halmstad, Gothenburg, Skövde and Katrineholm. There are no changes and the trip is around five hours. This is the first direct train service since 1999, but back then the train went through Hässleholm. (which takes less time)

- We are very excited about the premiere, says Anders Larsson, who is responsible for the line at SJ.

AD:

Already, over 1,000 tickets to and from Helsingborg are booked and Anders Larsson hopes and believes that the route will be popular.

- This also opens up completely new travel patterns. Helsingborg will be connected to several other places in the Mälardalen region.

If changing in Katrineholm, Västeras will be much more accesable than it is today.

The train will go daily to Stockholm in the morning and back to Helsingborg in the afternoon. On the way back, however the train skips a stop in Katrineholm in favor of Hallsberg.

The new train starts to operate in conjunction with the change of the timetable in December. A contributing factor to the opening of the route is that the Hallandsås Tunnel now is open, which makes the traffic on the West Coast Railway easier and more efficient.

Another factor that played a part is that the city of Helsingborg lobbied for the line for some time. Among other things, they informed SJ about Helsingborg and that the northwest of Skåne is a region of growth and thus in need of good connections with the capital.

What the ticket will cost is not possible to say for sure. It all depends on when you book. Late or early gives the best price.

It occurs to me that Sweden's X2000 equipment is aging, having been in continuous service for 25+ years. Is there any plan for their replacement (say with Pendolinos)?

No, not yet. The trains are too young for a 1-on-1 replacement.

Instead, SJ is having them overhauled. The first phase of this overhaul will be done by Stadler and ABB where the electrics on board of 36 X2000 will be replaced with new equipment. This should increase reliability while the energy consumption will be reduced.

An interior refresh will be performed in a second phase, which will be tendered seperately. Unlike MTR Express (which have only 1 class), SJ wants to retain 2 classes on board their trains.

Yes, the X2000 introduced in 1990 is outdated and there is no successor yet, but an improved, more effiecient and more comfortable version of the Regina from Bombardier called X3000 is replacing the X2000 at some routes with less passengers. The X3000 has high efficiency and better acceleration.

The Stockholm-Malmö HSR route will go through Hässleholm and Lund, and not Helsingborg, according to a statement by Catharina Håkansson Boman from the National Negotiation on Housing and Infrastructure. More will be known when the plans are revealed in February.

Today it has been announced that MTR has been chosen as the next operator of the Pendeltåg commuter rail concession by Stockholm's transport authority, SL. Starting from December 2016, MTR will take over operations from SJ daughter Stockholmståg. The new concession will run for 10 years and has an option for an extension of another 4 years.

Earlier this year, it was announced that SL opted to exercise an option for a 6 year extension to the Stockholm Tunnelbana concession, also operated by MTR.

This has been posted in the Stockholm public transport thread in the Urban Transport section. This thread is about national railways only so can we restrict discussion to that, please?

First train Helsingborg-Stockholm

Now the first direct train Helsingborg-Stockholm has departed. This is possible due to the opening of the new tunnel through the Halland ridge.

Yesterday an accident caused delays on the route Stockholm-Malmö

A hyperloop train might be a bit off, but a fixed connection between Sweden and Finland via Åland would be truly epic.

Migrant crisis: Sweden operator cancels trains on bridge link - BBC

Looks like there won't be as many trains between Copenhagen and Malmo after the new year as they are now required to do ID checks. This is a shame, surely this will effect a lot of commuters.

IIRC most commuters travel by car anyway on that route but yes, it will still be very bothersome.

I agree that the ID checks are necessary at this point, but the arrangement with train switching at Kastrup is imo not the best way to deal with it.

I was thinking that they could dedicate a platform at København H to Sweden-bound trains, and check ID:s when you enter the platform. Don't stop at Ørestad and Tårnby, and do the same platform access-check at Kastrup. This wouldn't delay the trains, only the time (slightly) it takes to go down to the platform. Of course the trains between Helsingør and København H need to be different from the Sweden-bound ones, but that's imo a minor problem? Or maybe I'm just delusional now thanks to christmas.

Given that SJ is cancelling all trains to and from Denmark, I guess it's not possible to do checks in a way like you propose. This might have to do with capacity at København H?
