Breaking News

The swedish state railways SJ has today decided to initiate the procurement of 30 new high speed train sets with delivery in 2021. With a maximum speed of 250 km/h, they will be Sweden's fastest train. The planned deal of between 5 and 6 billion is the largest train investment made for over 30 years.

The decision means that SJ will send a tender request to suppliers both within and outside Europe. The market dialogue with potential train manufacturers that SJ has carried out in the last year shows great interest in the procurement.

- The procurement decision is a milestone in our offensive investment strategy. By acquiring new modern trains, we will be able to meet the increasing demand for rail travel in the future, while providing our customers with a better travel experience. The new trains will provide better comfort, shorter travel time and increased punctuality and reliability, "said Crister Fritzson, CEO of SJ.

The new trains will gradually be taken into service from the beginning of 2021 and used on high demand stretches and needing increased seating capacity.

"We will run the new trains within Sweden as well as Norway and Denmark. The plan is to start on the Stockholm-Malmö route, as part of our investment in southern Sweden", says Crister Fritzson.

According to the specification, the new trains must have a maximum speed of 250 km/h. They will have more than 350 seats per vehicle and shall be based on proven technology to reduce the risk of interference. At the same time, they will be adapted for Nordic conditions, for example, regarding climate and tolerance for wildlife problems. In the procurement, the focus is on making the trains more intelligent in everything from maintenance and technical equipment to information to travelers.

The decision to procure 30 new fast trains is part of SJ's offensive investment strategy of a total of 9 billion over a five-year period. In addition to the new trains, the strategy includes a comprehensive modernization of all X 2000 trains and the entire night train fleet.

SJ did not plan to buy 10 high speed trains recently, or are these different?
They will not have tilting, right?

Departure for the dream train to Haparanda

It will be possible to reach the easternmost city in Sweden by passenger-rail again.

..but only temporarily.




The dream train connects Luleå, Boden, Kalix and Haparanda, 3 trains in each direction.

"I hope people will meet up and show how important the railway is by riding the trains this particular day. I would have ridden, but I'm busy that day, "said Tommy Nilsson, who sees great opportunities for passenger traffic on the Haparanda line.

- The passenger traffic would be an oppurtunity for commuters to start work already on the train. A trip from Oulu, Finland, to Haparanda is also planned and it would allow people to commute from Finland to work in Kalix. It would be easier to get to the muncipal hospital in Luleå. In all likelihood, traffic would also make Kalix even more attractive as a place of residence.

When can traffic be a reality?
"I hope for a decision on traffic launch in the RMK (Regional Public Transport Authority) in October, which means that traffic can be real in the beginning of 2021," says Tommy Nilsson.

Best Statistics for Mjölby

During the last month, the trains that arrived at Mjölby railway station were the most punctual ones. Mjölby had the best statistics of on time train-arrivals in Sweden - and the figures looked good during the rest of the year too.

95.7% of the trains arrived no more than 5 minutes late to the station in Mjölby during November. A figure that was the best in the whole country, according to statistics from the Swedish Transport Administration. (Trafikverket)

In Linköping, the corresponding figure was 92.2% and in Norrköping 91.3% both better than the 88.8% national average.
