I personally think that the Sydney Opera House is definitely an imposing building and an architectural marvel of the 20th century.
People often underestimate its sheer size. For those who don't know, the Sydney Opera House is 183 metres tall and 120 metres wide at its widest point. The Opera House has five theatres, five rehearsal studios, four restaurants, six bars and numerous souvenir shops. The opera house's roof is constructed of 1,056,000 glazed white granite tiles.

Not to disagree with you, but I have a hard time believing the Opera House is 183 meters tall.

Yeah, I wrote that wrong. It's 183m long and is 67m tall.

Yep. And it was built to impose in the middle of a working class neighbourhood.

STFU and take your illiterate BS elsewhere ... if you do not find the Potala palace an imposing building than move on ... you would need to be filled with hatred fueled by the state propaganda to not find it an imposing building in the context of the city of Lhasa but I get it ... people have opinions ... but no need to spread your hatred on here. And you may not find it beautiful but that is not an objective quality to begin with.

Here are some more pics by the way:

Chicago has a number of good canidates from the Sears Tower, the Old Post Office (straddling a major expressway), McCormick Place Complex but I would have to go with.............

Merchandise Mart Building , Chicago
was once the largest commercial building in the world.

...and while we're in the east, you can't get much more imposing than Taipei 101, that absolutely towers over everything in the vicinity:
