Constructed 1928-1930

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merchandise_Mart
When opened in 1930, the Merchandise Mart or the Mart, located in Chicago, Illinois, was the largest building in the world with 4,000,000 square feet (372,000 m2) of floor space.

........The building was the largest in the world in terms of floorspace, but was surpassed by The Pentagon in 1943,[11] and now stands twenty-fifth on the list of largest buildings in the world..........

Yes, possibly. Though sheer size can be imposing, the manipulation of carefully scaled elements and dramatic forms can also result in an imposing effect.

This might be a good example (St. John's Abbey, by Marcel Breuer, in Collegeville, Minnesota):

When you are stood next to the taj mahal you realise its size, but from a distance such as above you have nothing to compare it to so its not imposing in its parklands.

imo that's definitely imposing. The fact all the buildings around it are symmetrical to it also, and the canals and fountains that lead to it...

It's about half the size of St. Peter's Basilica though.

I think the Taj Mahal is 'too beautiful' to be imposing, if that's possible.

Hmmm. For me fountains and trees and open spaces 'dampen' the imposing feel of the building. For example look at the building in Brussels. You're quietly going down a street and are like 'Holy mother of God, where the fluck did this come from?'. But when a building (however huge or imposing) is in the middle of an empty space with fountains leading to it, you just whistle along the way while it gets bigger as you get closer.
