[SYR] Syria | road infrastructure

image hosted on flickr

The main motorway is from Aleppo to Damascus and on to Jordan border. There are also motorways from Damascus to Lebanon and from Homs to Tartus and Latakia. The motorway from Aleppo to Latakia is under construction. Most of other roads are ordinary highways.

Motorway from Damascus to Jordan. Probably M1(?). Mostly signposted with Mashreq numbers (similar to European E-road system) as M45.

At Google Maps I can find a divided highway partly opened partly under construction from Aleppo to Ar Raqqah. It looks more like expressway with level crossings and without levelled crossings and so on.
I haven't driven on this road.

Main north-south motorway was built probably at least 20 years ago. At least part of this. I could found this from the map from 1993. Then they missed only part of the motorway between Aleppo and Hama. Concerning the heavy traffic with lots of very heavy trucks and hot summer temperatures its really needs more maintains. This autumn I saw that they are starting to build new parallel motorway south from Damascus instead of renovating the old one.

Road from Palmyra (Tadmour) to Homs close to Homs.
It's hard to find correct road numbers of Syrian roads as these are almost never signposted. It's common to see only Mashreq road numbers in Syria. So it's M20 according to Mashreq system.

The road is going through Homs Gap between Ansariya Mountains and Lebanese Mountains. This is the only natural road between inner Syria and sea. Lebanese Mountains at the background.

M45 between Homs and Hama
It's part of the most important road in Syria running from Turkey to Jordan. Most of the road is currently motorway except some parts between border of Turkey and Aleppo. The motorway has a very heavy traffic and most parts of it really need a renovation and upgrading.

From Saraqib to Latakia the motorway is ready and opened until Arihah. The rest of motorway is still under construction.

The rest of M10 is ordinary highway with mostly 2 lanes. The motorway until Latakia is under construction but the stretch between Arihah and Jisr Ash-Shughur is actually ready to use but still not opened for traffic.

Crossing the new motorway. It's built by Egyptian company and seems that it would be first "real" motorway in Syria with proper junctions, controlled access, parallel roads for local traffic etc. Sadly even already completed stretches of motorway are not opened for traffic. Anyway some locals are using these completed parts for traffic mostly during the night time
