AUSTRIA – Baden, Durnstein, Krems, Pandorf & Vienna

.
.
Hi all, I’m a Malaysian and this is my first trip to Europe in October 2009. It was kind of last minute travel arrangements & was so hectic that I was running short of time struggling to cope with the trip to 4 countries in just 8 days. I started in Austria then destined to Hungary, proceed to Slovakia, followed by Czech Republic (all travellings were made by roads) & finally fly back home from Vienna.

Nevertheless, it was worth an effort, after seeing these 4 lovely countries & encountered friendly & helpful peoples along my journey.

So I will start with the town of Baden, Austria.

(Sorry for the bad quality of some of the pictures due to the use of mobile phone camera.)

**********************

Baden (Slovene: Kopanje pri Dunaju) is a spa town in the Austrian state of Lower Austria and the capital of the Baden district.

Located about 26 kilometres south of Vienna, frequently the name is given as Baden bei Wien (Baden near Vienna); this name, however, is not official, but can be used to distinguish it from other cities of the same name such as Baden-Baden or Baden, Switzerland.

The municipality consists of the Katastralgemeinden Baden, Braiten, Gamingerhof, Leesdorf, Mitterberg, Rauhenstein and Weikersdorf

Because of my passion exploring small towns, and Baden is one of them which happened to be the closest one to Vienna. My intention was to visit as many as possible but due to time constraints, managed only to select a few closest to the capital.

Dürnstein, Austria – my next destination…….

Dürnstein is a small town on the Danube river in the Krems-Land district, in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Wachau region and also a well-known wine growing area. The municipality consists of the Katastralgemeinden Dürnstein, Oberloiben and Unterloiben………

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%BCrnstein

********************

King Richard I of England (Richard the Lionheart) was once held captive by Duke Leopold V of Austria in a castle in Dürnstein after their dispute during the Third Crusade.

So, a hotel located next to the ruins of the castle was named after Richard ! ( Richard Löwenherz in German). The landscape was so spectacular as its sorrounded by vineyards, overlooking Blue Danube with hilly backdrop.

We have a Baden in Ontario, Canada but it's not quite as exquisite as the one in Austria.
