Thank you for the comments, mates!
Here the next pictures... As always, the newest ones you can find in my blog: http://rigaphoto.blogspot.com

140. Railway bridge at night. Riga railway bridge looks lovely at night - both from ground level and above. I think blue color is the best choice for lightening such huge objects in the city - it makes great contrast with the red&yellow colors of the city's lights.

141. Riga take off it's adornments.
Most of Riga's Christmas decorations stayed almost all winter this year.

142. ? To build or not to build? - that's the question. Some month ago one of the hottest topics in Latvia was the reconstruction project of Riga's TEC-2 (largest thermal power station in Latvia). The Minister of Economics thought the construction costs asked by Turkish company "Gama" (the winners of the tender) is too high (350 mio EUR) and was reluctant to give the final acceptance to the project. In the end, he agreed, when the price was lowered by 20 mio. The chimney in the picture is the chimney of TEC-2 and it seems it was also confused... The pic isn't artificially created, it was the real view in one winter's morning of 2008.

143. Old Town's winter skyline.
Riga's skyline is considered to be one of the best looking historical skylines in Europe. It's not huge, but it's very picturesque in it's zigzag lines created by centuries old churches with a help of Science Academy Stalinist highrise, which blends in surprisingly well. This winter view is taken from Vanšu bridge, February.

144. Central station=shopping temple.
Riga Central Station building from it's lateral entrance. Central station is originally built in 1960, but reconstructed in 2003. After the reconstruction it's very commercialized, housing supermarket, 220 shops, as well as many cafes and restaurants - every day it's visited by ~150 000 people (about 50 million per year - absolute number 1 in Latvia), only small part of them goes to trains.

145. To winter in a tent. Can you imagine yourself living in a tent in winter, 24 hours a day and several months in turn? 9 people have done it right in the centre of Riga since November 30 last year (and this winter has been extremely cold and long with temperatures constantly below zero and sometimes dropping as low as minus 27). No, they're not some crazy extremists who do it for fun - they're people who do it out of despair of economical situation in Latvia and who believes they can change something with such a shocking protest action. Some of them was forced to interrupt their tent living and go to the hospital to cure pneumonia, but later they returned again. They have built those tents right opposite to government's (Cabinet of Ministers) building (it's the grey building on the left side of 1st picture), asking for immediate solution to the unemployment problem. They've wrote their demands and opinions on those sheets which are flaunting in the wind in 2nd picture. The big red slogan in the 1st picture means: "Power is within people!"

146. Prison. Riga Central prison is the largest prison in Latvia. It's located close to the centre but in a remote area, besides railway and cemetery. There has been several prison breaks - one time prisoners got help from soldiers, who gave them soldier uniforms and went out together, second time prisoners broke bars and climbed over the wall (just like in "Prison Break", he he). But it seems the prison is seriously improved in the previous years - at least it looks so from the outside and hopefully it's also much better inside and prisoners have toilets in their cameras now and not just a casks.

147. Graffitti tunnel.
Underground tunnel below Kalnciema street in Ķīpsala island could be the most "graffittiest" passageway in Riga. At nights, it's mostly empty, and graffitti painters can enjoy their time. You see - they have done some writings even on the ceiling somehow.

148. Stockmann tunnel. This passageway tunnel is the newest in Riga, opened only last year and it connects Origo supermarket/Central Station with Stockmann supermarket. It was one of the conditions for Stockmann - to build this tunnel, however, it took more than 7 years until city finally forced they to fulfill their obligations.

149. Last days of life. Soviet time Slāvu air bridge over railway is demolished - a new air bridge is built besides it and another one will be built in the place of it. It's the part of huge reconstruction process of Riga's southern highway system, or 2nd part of Southern bridge construction.

150. Akas street. Small sidestreet in Riga centre. One of the lovely wooden buildings, this one has a lot of character, imo. Wooden buildings are like "aboriginals" of Riga centre, and, in opposite to most of other European metropolises, Riga's "aboriginals" have survived - in Riga in total there are about 14 000 wooden buildings! In Riga centre, they make very interesting height level perspectives by interrupting 5-7 floor masonry built-up.

151. Advertisement in elevator. Probably some 1/2 of Riga's inhabitants is defined by law as a criminals... Because they have downloaded at least a few films or music albums. People here are too poor to afford to buy the legal music or films in shops. Some 10 years ago many bought piratical CDs and DVDs in Riga's Central Market (and other markets), then came internet with it's infinite possibilities and, ironically, destroyed this piracy business.
I took this pic today in my house's elevator - Balticom, the leading internet provider of my neighbourhood has came with some interesting and provocative advertisement. Upper text on advert says: "When you download at a gigantic speed, you can become a criminal". On the black box which "criminal" holds in his hands is written: "3 films in 10 minutes". On the lower part is written: "Balticom asks to respect the law". Actually, they are promoting just the opposite Broadband internet speed here is really incredibly fast - Latvia is one of the leaders in the world, along with Japan, Estonia and a few other countries. Don't ask me why - I don't have a clue...

152. Sparks in the night. Dom church square in last autumn's light festival "Staro Riga" time. There was a several fires inside these metal cylinders, and when the wind blew through, the flying sparks looked beautiful.

New food supplies for Riga foto eaters.

153. Sushi corner.
Sushi has became rather popular here, although it's absolutely exotic food for us. I have heard many likes it but I guess I will never understand how people can eat raw fish and even pay for it.

154. Bus station new tablos.
This picture shows Riga bus station new tablo screens. Here you also see how they dislays information about departing times. First (2nd) tablo in the picture shows departures to international routes - Tallinn, Moscow, Vilnius, next are to Latvian cities. The pic is taken in Friday's evening - when the bust station is very crowded.

155. Mirage in snowfall.
"Feel the sun!" - an advertisement which promotes vacations in Turkey. The surrounding weather is the best context for an advertiser to create the desired effect, I guess. Just one "little" problem - after the economic breakdown, most of us can't afford to travel anymore.

156. "Estonian" crossing. First sunny and warmer days of March. I took a photo walk around centre's eastern part. This is Tallinas street, crossing with Tērbatas street. Both streets are named after Estonian cities, Tallinas, is, of course, Tallinn's street, but Tērbata - it is the previous (Latvian version) name of Tartu, 2nd largest Estonian city.

157. Tropical fruits from Latvia. One day went by this funny show-window. The inscription on the window means "Food from Latvia countryside". Since when we can grow pineapples, mandarins, oranges, grapefruits in our countryside?

158. Winter Vs Spring. Winter didn't want to leave easy this year and such a strong snowfall was in the middle of March (with the largest snowflakes I have ever seen).

159. Trapped. Once again return to last year's light festival "Staro Riga" ("Riga shines"). One of the most extraordinary artist performances in Old Town...

160. Riga after midnight. View from my kitchen window to Southern highway. This traffic infrastructure is very new - just 2 years ago there were a greeen trees instead of these elevated highways. I will post a picture of how it looked as next one.

161. So, this is how the same place as in yesterday's picture looked 2 years ago, summer 2008, before Southern highway construction. Much more green and non-urban. Btw, this was the most beautiful rainbow I have seen - one moment it was even tripled!

162.
And the Southern bridge itself
- largest construction project of not only Latvia but whole Baltic states for the past 20 years. Many were worried about it's safety, even famous Russian astrologist Pavel Globa predicted the possible collapse of the bridge in 3-4 months time after it's opening. More than 17 months has already passed now, but the bridge is in it's place.

163. Swedish Invasion. Swedes have been one of the most active investors in Latvia for the last 20 years. In the picture you see both highrises of Ķīpsala island now carries Swedish companies names - to the left you see famous Swedbank offices tower, to the right - on the facade of abandoned Soviet time highrise (once it was Press House) Swedish telecommunication company Tele2 continues their scandalous advertisement campaign which raised even global media interest last autumn, when they faked a meteorite fall in Northern Latvia.

164. Rhino.
Recently discovered a new eating-place in Distant centre area - "Rhino". This concept seemed so unusual and thus interesting to me, and as I was hungry, I decided to go in and take a meal. Of course, interior is also all about rhinos - rhino posters on the walls, rhino figures, etc. And the meal itself was also really tasty (thank God, it wasn't rhino's meat ).

165. Elephant. Continuing with exotic animals... After yesterday's rhino today here comes elephant - that is another cafe, this one on Merķeļa street, right next to Riga circus, so no wonder why such a name in this case. Haven't been inside there yet but definitely will try someday.

166. Stockmann & Science Academy.
Just opposite to Central Station and Origo supermarket, there stands Stockmann shopping centre, which is connected by tunnel. In left side you see Science academy highrise, which can remind you Moscow (with it's "7 Stalin sisters") or Warsaw's Science and Culture palace. While most of Moscowites love their Stalinist highrises (well, I just suppose, judging by Moscow photos blogs), and most of Warsawians hate their building (that's a widely known fact), then Rigans attitude is more or less neutral against this 50ies highrise which was once one of the highest buildings in Europe.

167. Countryside in the city.
Many places in Riga doesn't look like a city at all. This lovely place which looks like from deep countryside, is actually in historical district of Čiekurkalns - charming neighbourhood in Eastern Riga, consisted of narrow streets, low-floor buildings and green gardens.

168. "Ghetto" cat. It seems this cat doesn't like to be photographed - just like many people here. Besides, he is a cat from so-called "ghetto" district of Riga - Maskačka, so no wonder about this attitude - can't trust to anyone!

Forgot to add - I invite all of you to my freshly opened second daily photo blog - Europe Daily Photo. The concept is to post every day a picture from some European city, town or countryside place. Of course, I haven't traveled THAT much to be able to run it without some periodical repeating of cities, but with always new, interesting subjects.
I make this as an more or less open project - if you're interested, you can send me your picture from some city/town/place of Europe and I will post it with referring to your name, and, if you want, contact info. But the picture has to be: taken by yourself; of good quality, composition & with interesting subject, place or theme etc. My e-mail where you can send me pictures: [email protected].
This is how blog looks like:

Riga centre has got quite many shopping centres (almost everywhere where I have been, there isn't tendency to build supermarkets in the city's centre, f.e., in Stockholm it was almost impossible to find at least one) - Stockmann, Origo, Galerija Centrs, Barona Centrs, Valdemāra Centrs, Triangula bastions, Bērnu pasaule. So, "Galerija Patollo" is upcoming 8th shopping mall in Riga's centre.
Yeah, I remember that when I was to the Baltics few years ago one of the things that freaked me out the most was the great amount of super/hypermarkets, they're everywhere. I assumed, because of that and other stuff, that you people are anxious for some wild capitalism, the cities seemed so desperately hungry for dynamism, loved the atmosphere. Didn't have such a strong impression about that in other former socialist countries though.

Awesome thread btw, simply a model for this forum.

169. Birznieka-Upīša streetscene. View from Birznieka-Upīša street, southern part of centre. To me, it looks not like typical Riga sight, rather a bit like some Mexican or Latin American city (excluding background).

170. Soviet time cinema. Soviet time cinema "Ilga" in Iļģuciems district. Of course, it's not cinema anymore, nowadays Riga have only a few multihall cinemas, while in Soviet times there were such small cinemas spread around the city. Anyway, the building itself is a typical example of Soviet time public buildings architecture - could be an interest object for Soviet time culture explorers. The picture itself looks like it could be taken 30 years ago - only Narvesen newsstand spoils this feeling.

171. Revitalization. Once one of the mightiest industrial centres of Russia Empire, Riga holds rich industrial architectural heritage, which is now slowly turned into offices or appartments. This is previous gypsum factory in Ķīpsala, now luxurious (3-floor) flats there.

172. Girl and the city. On Elizabetes street. I catched hers face just for the second, until she noticed me photographing, she immediately turned away.

173. Warmer than in Rome. The very first really warm day of this year was 31st March when temperature in Riga reached +18. My reaction to this beautiful day was opening the season of scooter driving - I drove from Bauska town (60 km from Riga, my other home is there) and made a stop in Ķekava town, which is a part of Riga urban area. Right on the roadside there is Ķekava Lutheran Church - a small but very pretty one. Originally built in 1783, but several times reconstructed.

174. "You are here". I noticed this on the wall of telephone box.

In case if you are interested in Riga and/or like my Riga photos, you can always stay tuned with the newest updates in my blog, which has now got new address (www.photoriga.com) and also a new design with great way to explore photo archive by multiple categories and subcategories in the above horizontal menu. A snapshot:

175. Riga symbols. Most of cities has it's symbols, which is immediately associated with city's name (Paris - Eiffel tower, London - Big Ben, Moscow - Kremlin, Rome - Colosseum, etc.). For Riga such symbols are the main elements of Old Town's skyline - Riga Dom church (to the left) and St Peter's church.

176. Car parade on Jūrmala beach. Where else cars could look as good as on sea horizon in the background? This car parade with both antique and modern, small and big cars were organized in 2008 on the beach of Riga's neighbouring seaside resort town Jūrmala and I just happened to be there at the right time without even previously knowing about the parade. Btw, in my opinion, Jūrmala as a separate city is a mistake - I regard it being inseparable part of Riga as it historically was, that's why you'll find pictures from Jūrmala here time by time.

177. Behind the mirror.
Alice in wonderland.

178. Bye, bye winter! "Bye, bye!" to the coldest winter in 21st Century in Latvia. Many disliked it, but I was one of those who loved the thick snow, coldness and sunny days (however, most them were in January, February and March was totally grey again and then I started to long after spring).

179. Tunnel musician. One of the "tunnel musicians" in Riga. This one was quite unhappy with me taking picture, he even stopped playing (the moment in shot) and tried to say something to me in Russian... When I talked kindly with him and gave some coins, then he suddenly changed his attitude and it seems even started to feel awkward about his previous a bit aggressive manner.

180. Spring blossom. From last year. Now it's exactly the same phase of spring here.

181.Window style. Ingenious solution of window replacement in Sarkandaugava district.

182. Ready to go.

183. Summer chillout. People relaxing on the banks of Riga city canal. It's not allowed to sit on the lawns of centre parks, but it seems noone cares too much about that.

184. Discovery of modern architecture. Recently, in the western outskirts of the city I discovered a modern building which I hadn't seen before. It's located between Spice shopping complex and Ulmana highway. I think, it's a really great piece of modernity (this area have some more good contemporary architecture examples).

On Thursday there were 2 demonstrations in Riga with one reason - to protest against the arrest of Neo. Yes, you red it right - Neo, and no, it's not some kind of adaption of the Matrix movie. It's for real. Neo for a several months is a most famous Latvian hacker (well, not really a hacker, but anyway) and at the same time the people's hero, in other word called as the "modern Robin Hood". His real name is Ilmārs Poikāns and he is a 31 year old researcher at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the University of Latvia's Institute of Mathematics and Information. What did he? He discovered a "hole" in the information system of State Revenue Service and in several months (the "hole" was open all that time) he downloaded more than 7,2 million confidential tax documents - and then leaked the data of wages in state-owned firms and banks to the media. The data exposed a shocking high wages & compensations which were payed to clerks even in crysis time. For example, in Riga public transport enterprise some highest officials recieved some 40 000 Euros in a month... while at the same time the ticket prices have been raised and the dotations from the government asked. You can read more about Neo in BBC news portal: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8533641.stm.

Now, this week Neo was arrested. And in order to do that, the policemans even searched the Latvian Television reporter's Ilze Nagla home (she was the journalist to whom Neo provided the first data). It has raised serious concerns about press freedom in Latvia - and that was the second reason for these protests.

The people were not too many, actually. Some hundred in the first protest at the Cabinet of Ministers, and about the same number at the second protest at the prosecutor's general office. But we reached our main target - Neo was released from arrest that day. Of course, theoretically he still has to face charges, but I hope it will end with nothing because all what he has done - he has copied the data from the internet without breaking into system, just using the existing "hole". And in normal democratic country data about state officials wages should be public anyway.

185. I made it to the second protest at Prosecutor's office. Here you see the overview of protesting people:

186.

187. These people stayed with placard calling to passing-by drivers to signalize in support of the demonstration.

188.

189. Many of them also did it.

190.

191. Others wrote slogans on the asphalt with chalks. This one: "Pīp for Neo!"

192. "Freedom for Neo!"

193. Media photographers, TV camera mans and reporters there were almost as many as protesters

194. Policemans observing the event from aside

195.

196.

I will indicate date in which these photos are published in my blog.

197. April 14: When there is no water...

Today there was interruption of water supply in my neighbourhood. Water tank-truck was arrived and people hurried to fulfil their conteiners. But already now water supply is renewed.

198. April 16: Triple highway

Now that's infrastructure - one highway for cars, second highway for bycicles and third highway for walkers. Bicyclists are one of heralds of spring - now we're (I'm one of them) everywhere in Riga. Riga can hardly be described as a "bicycle friendly" city, but the situation has improved in the last years. City planners just had to respond to the rapid growth of bicycle drivers and now several bicycle roads are built at least.

199. April 19: The bottle and railway

Abandonded railway and an empty bottle of wine...

200. April 20: Outsider

This building is just like shy people who don't dare to be themselves - instead they just reflect others. Especially uneasy they feel between strangers - in the company with too different people. This building is just like such outsider - a modern one between many luxurious historical buildings. And so it tries to become as invisible as possible - it's really somehow unnoticeable when passing by. If that was the architect's concept, it is perfectly succesful.

201. April 21: Television news stand-up

Today I heard the news before the others... One of leading Latvia's television channel reporter and camera man filmed a stand-up at the Latvia parliament building when I passed by there, telling that 2 oligarch's parties have united for the next elections at autumn. These parties are largely responsible for Latvia's corruptive system and the heaviness of economic crysis here. But sadly they will get voted in the next parliament anyway, a part of people are politically dumb like sheeps here - a smart and massive advertisement campaign is enough to fool them completely. It has happened before and will happen again.

202. April 22: Marine traffic

Riga has much more developed air traffic than sea - airport exceeded 4 million passengers last year, while seaport only some 700 000. But last week, when Riga airport as many other airports in Europe was paralyzed due to Iceland volcano activity, many people used ships to depart from Riga.

203.

204. April 24: World of flowers

Flowers plants' selling space in Riga Central Market is colorful place where to enjoy various sorts of flowers.

205.

206. April 25: Cinema Riga. Sculptures over Cinema Riga entrance. Cinema Riga is well hidden building in Riga centre, Dzirnavu street - from the street side it is covered by Soviet time building.

207. April 26: "Apartment" in staircase? Some weeks ago in Sarkandaugava district I saw this quite surreal scene - a staircase full of old pieces of furniture, blankets, etc, and two men sitting and smoking there. Are they really living there?

208. April 27: Metropolis at night. Riga below rainy sky on autumn evening - cosy winding street network of Old Town in forefront, historical centre boulevards, streets and building quarters in background.

209. April 28: Reflections in the puddle. One time in March, when was bored while waiting the bus to my neighbourhood, I noticed the interesting effect of double reflection in pool on the pavement - there reflects both the top-floor of the building from opposite side of street, and also the electric bulbs from office rooms of building in this side of the street.

210. April 29: New appartment highrises.
"Metropolia" highrises in Imanta are one of many footprints of real estate boom years in Riga... These appartment buildings still stays half-empty. There is a calculation that more than 3000 new flats are unsold in Riga. Some politicians wants to give residence permits to foreign investors, with hope that they will buy out these appartments. In the meantime, Nordea bank starts a new real estate loan campaign, where they aim to give loans to about 3600 flat purchasing deals.

211. April 30: Car cemetery & prison.
Car cemetery in Dārzciems suburb on one side of the railway, historical building of Riga Central Prison on the other.
