Yes. I think that's an old rendering.

Curved or straight, if the overall shape is the same it should still look pretty cool.

The NYC Buildings website is now showing the permit application for this as "Last Action: PLAN EXAM - DISAPPROVED 01/18/2013 (J)". Anyone have any insight on this? Serious trouble, or just bureaucracy as usual...?

It's common to have the paperwork handed back early on over missing information or some other picayune issue.

Not serious trouble at all.

Disapproved does not mean "not approved" or "denied", it means "not yet approved". The plan examiner must have found some issues with the current plan set (related to code issues) so they must be corrected. This is standard business.

Thanks for the insights gentlemen. Demolition seems to be moving VERY slowly; hope to see some forward motion on this soon.

Indeed, too bad explosions are not allowed.

Is it because there are other buildings too close to it? Cause I have seen implosions even in dense urban areas (for example the Landmark Tower in Fort Worth).

You'd be talking about the expulsion of an enormous debris clouds into what is one of the densest areas on earth, not to mention the ungodly amount of infrastructure that resides below every single building in NY. You'd have to tell huge swaths of Manhattan, and depending on wind patterns Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, to basically shut all their windows until the debris cloud went away, also shut down streets to vehicular and pedestrian traffic because it would impede visibility, until the cloud just sort of went away. With all due respect to Fort Worth, density wise it's not comparable to the UES in anyway.

SSP lists the Coach Tower as u/c too so they have been wrong before. Unless I see pics I won't believe this is truly u/c

To anyone who has the blatant audacity to suggest imploding a building with all its toxic shi* inside in the middle of manhattan, I can't imagine what you are thinking! I actually think you are not thinking at all.

I know imploding a building is ridiculous and forbidden in NYC. I just said that because I thought the current building is ugly and it would have been a nice candidate fo a big explosion.

Then why did they do it in Fort Worth, and in Las Vegas, and in Detroit, and in Cincinnati and in Great Britain, and in Houston ........

I'm not saying that it should be done in this case, but it is far from being as outrageous as you suggest

A believe I have heard somewhere that imploding a building is not allowed in the state of New York.

Manhattan is much denser than any of those places. Many more people live per square mile than anywhere you have listed. Combine that with the strict environmental regulations that you find in the USA, then you have a good reason.

Again, I'm not saying that it should be done here, in fact, I agree with you that it shouldn't be done here, though I'm not really sure whether density is such a major attribute in this. After all, even in those less dense cities many people were inevitably breathing the dust
