Here's the view through the 57th St fence this morning (July 27, 2014).

Most of the excavation of the southern wall is done, and the curvy bits are looking nice (click the pic for a better view):

New Renders, from Curbed:

As expected, it's fairly basic, as compared with the older renders. Although if I'm being honest, the one with all the funky angles was too weird for my tastes.

this one is too boring for my taste, at least the previous one had interesting features. At least it's not like we expected anything better.

To be honest, after what happened with the school, I'm pretty happy with this design.

Meh! It is what is... Nothing special but I'll take anything new being built in the East side of midtown. This tower IMO will not be marketed for ultra luxury that's for sure.

I came to expect a Kaufman-esque box so this design takes hopes up a notch...a tiny notch.

the original design was just amazing, a pity they changed it. Though the new isn't bad, just a bit boring.

Looks like the rendering on the WIP sign has been revised - going for something a bit more 'deconstructivist', I guess

Huh. Not dissimilar to the cutouts on 7 Bryant Park. Not exactly groundbreaking, but it's still attractive, and that feature will be distinct enough that you'll recognize it as "that building" when looking out into the sea of high-rises.

Depending on the execution and the cladding, this could be a low-key gem for Midtown East.

First Look Inside SOM's Undulating 252 East 57th Street Tower
http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2014/0...reet_tower.php

Apparently this will rise to 65 Floors!!

Quote:
World Wide Group and Rose Associate's luxury tower at 252 (née 250) East 57th Street has maintained a pretty low profile throughout its development, considering its 57th Street locale and thus its apartments' inevitably outrageous price tags. Now the tower's full website launch gives the most substantial amount of info on and in-depth look into the SOM-designed building to-date.

The tower will have an undulating glass facade, and will rise 65 stories. It's 93 condos will begin on the 36th floor, and be priced from $4.5 million. With newly revealed floorplans, the building's sales launch must be imminent. (read more and more renderings in link)

Surprisingly I pegged this development to be rentals.

Could be, from 59 to 65 floors! Especially since they are going Condo here instead of rentals.

Wow, that's actually really nice! I didn't think that 'notch' could be a curved cutout.

This will actually look really elegant, and in my opinion, much more so than the previous design, which looked unbalanced.

This is going to have one hell of a fancy carport! I'm not totally sold on the balconies (I find them almost universally cheesy), but they've made a valiant effort to integrate them into the curvy facade of the building. Overall I also think this is the superior design to the angular previous version.

Yeah, it's going to have a similar profile to Trump. Not quite as prominent as the midnight obelisk, but anything less than a supertall would need a pretty crazy design to stand out on 57th street... I'm glad they're going with a certain amount of restraint.
