It's striking and it's sleekly modern. I like it!

It soars!

Phase 1 which is the school and retail is u/c. When the school opens next academic year, the existing secondary school will be demolished and the tower will rise on that site.

Whole Foods moves into 250 East 57th Street
December 05, 2011 04:00PM

From left: interior of Whole Foods at 250 East 57th Street and exterior
Construction for the Whole Foods market at at the massive $700 million, 1 million-square-foot mixed-use project rising at 250 East 57th Street is complete, according to a statement from the World-Wide Group. The organic grocer has moved into their 39,000-square-foot space on the ground floor and begun building it out.

The site was a hole in the ground just two months ago.

The public-private partnership mixed-use project by World-Wide Group and the Educational Construction Fund will include two new schools, a 59-story residential tower with rental and condominium units, and 78,000 square feet of retail in addition to the organic grocer, which will have entrances on both 56th and 57th streets.

Whole Foods and the schools are slated to open in fall 2012.

The mixed-use project will include two new schools, a 59-story residential tower with rental and condo units, and 78,000 square feet of retail in addition to Whole Foods.

Neighbors worry that too many mega-developments are underway on the same block, as a water main is being constructed by the city in the same time frame.

When the two schools, PS 59 and the High School of Art and Design, are completed, the second phase of construction will begin on the residential and retail portions of the development. A school at 250 East 63rd Street was built to house the students of PS 59 while the new school is constructed. The residential and additional retail portions of the development are set to open in 2014. -- Guelda Voien

They're building a new school. Once the school year is finished, the building on the left in the second to last photo will be demolished, which is where the school is currently located and will be moved into the building that's under construction in the photos. After the school finishes its move into the new building, the old school will be demolished and the tower will be built there, again where the current school is located.

Does that make sense?

Build this origami already! This will definitely break the monotony of the NYC skyline ( unless Hearst is considered on the same league as this.)

Are we talking about the same city here? I'll tell you what monotony is: thousands and thousands of ugly concrete highrises which all look the same: fugly as hell.

It's as if Karl Fischer found some Lego blocks...

The design looks like a riff on the crappy midcentury next door. Together they form a seamless streetwall of hideous mediocrity. ( ideal for a school! )
