[Aber-what?] Aberystwyth, WALES (2007-2008 Photo Collection)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aberystwyth (English: Mouth of the River Ystwyth, English pronunciation: /ˌæbəˈrɪstwɪθ/, Welsh: [abɛrˈəstɔʏθ]) is a historic market town, administrative centre and holiday resort within Ceredigion, Wales. It is often colloquially known as Aber, and is located at the confluence of the rivers Ystwyth and Rheidol.

Since the late 19th century, Aberystwyth has also been a major Welsh educational centre, with the establishment of a university college there in 1872. The town's population was officially 15,935 in the 29 April 2001 census. During nine months of the year, there is an influx of students—to a total number of 8841 at July 2009, but there is no reliable measure of the number of those students whose family residence is outside Aberystwyth.

I had the most awesome and most memorable university life in this beautiful coastal town of Wales. Like most of you I've never heard of this little town until I stumbled upon it while searching for a British university. The rest is history but I feel obliged to share this hidden gem with all of you on SSC.

1. Aberystwyth Railway Station. Aberystwyth, Wales is about 4 hours and 30 minutes from London by train.

2. Part of the town centre. Aberystwyth is an isolated town but there is a McDonald's, a KFC and a Subway restaurant in Aberystwyth if you're wondering.

3. A row of local pubs. There are more than 50 pubs in Aberystwyth. That's a lot for a town with a population of 16,000 people!

4. British or should I call them Welsh houses and residential areas

5. Aberystwyth's main attraction - the beach, sea, pier and the seafront! So bloody nostalgic!

The Royal Pier in the background.

There's a restaurant, an amusement centre and a nightclub at Royal Pier. The nightclub is arguably the biggest, busiest and the greatest nightclub in Aberystwyth.

6. Albatrosses circling above me at the seafront. They are all over the town and they are quite a nuisance.

7. The seafront at dawn (Summer 2008)

8. A local Presbyterian church, St. David

St. Michael's Church (built in the 18th century)

9. On the tram up to Constitutional Hill, overlooking Cardigan Bay

10. Cardigan Bay

11. Pathway on Constitutional Hill

12. Overlooking Clarach Bay, a caravan park

13. A scenic view of Cardigan Bay and the Aberystwyth town from Constitutional Hill

14. Cliff off Constitutional Hill

More to come.

He he he, this is the first Aberystwyth thread i've seen on SSC!!! Coincidentally, I am sitting on a train destined for Aberystwyth as I type this!

Nice photos, the seafront is very pretty.

Did you ever swim in the sea here, it's a lot cooler than in Malaysia!

That is quite a claim you're making there, there is so much competition from other world famous nightclubs in this town.

Hi Jonesy55! I finally found the time to post this! Are you headed for Aberystwyth or are you getting off somewhere in between? Thanks! I have some more photos here of the castle ruins and the south bay. I'll put them up soon.

No way I'm going for a swim in the sea in Aber, once I put my foot in and I couldn't feel it!

World famous nightclubs? Nightclubs in Aberystwyth do not get bigger than Pier Pressure when I was there.

We usually club at Pier Pressure, The Bay and Why Not (formerly Yoko's).

Not heading into the wilds of Wales today, just my usual daily commute home from Birmingham to Shrewsbury, look forward to those extra pics

ha ha, I've never swum at Aber, but I've been in the sea many times in North Wales and Pembrokeshire. It's all psychological, once you've been in for a minute or two, it feels great, at least in Jul-Sep, maybe not in February.

lol, I was joking. I don't actually know the nightlife in Aber, it is probably better than most towns of 15,000 because of all the students but Pier Pressure has a rival for the best nightclub on Cardigan Bay, I have experienced the Sand Dancer in Barmouth to the north.

Thanks. The tram is underutilized but it is more than a hundred years old!

It only rises to a height of 100m above sea level at a speed of 4 miles per hour. It's pretty easy to make your way up the hill by foot in a reasonably short time.

I've been to Aberystwyth on several occasions, it is a very quaint peaceful town, and the setting is just wonderful. Thanks for the memories.

PS: Why no pictures of the castle?

I once went to Aberystwyth on a Sunday in 1971. It was closed!

Love the National Library building.

Closed? You mean the rail service to Aber?

hmm haven't changed much from the 70s then. No bus service on Sundays, clubs are closed though most pubs are open thanks to the student population in Aber
