I'm sure a suitably high wall will be built around it - there's enough precedent of some seriously high garden walls in Gosforth for the developers to be able to get away with it.

Trust me, I've been trying to have a look over some of them recently!

I can atest to that, when working on the aforementioned previous scheme for the site the partner in charge asked me to walk around the neighbourhood and photograph/ get an idea of the local typical boundary treatment/ house design. The answer being Big fuck-off walls, scary gates, and who knows what the hell the house looks like!!

The Co-op has now opened in the old High Street Woolies.

Great news! Odd in a way that the co-op already has a building on the High St (you can see it carved into the stonework) and yet they're not in it. Sold up and moved out decades ago presumably.

That is this building I think, with 'Newcastle upon Tyne' etched in the stone in big letters in a semi-circle at the top?

Not great photos, but here are a couple taken earlier today (by Mrs "H", as a passenger in the car this afternoon) of two of the new developments listed on this thread . .

The new 'Costa', at the front of 'Gosforth Shopping Centre' on the High Street . .

The new Co-op Food Store, in the old 'Woolies' building, at the Town Moor end of the High Street . .

Being so close to them, in a moving car, they could (perhaps) be 'any' Costa or Co-op, but there ya go!

That's the one - it has "Co-op" or "Co-operative" in the stonework further along the facade I think.

Good to see the Co-op moving to Gosforth High St though, it should hopefully pull more people onto the street, which a lot of people told me has been going downhill.

I thought that was for the Newcastle upon Tyne Tramways (the building had tram sheds behind) rather than Co-op?

Anway, in more good news for Gosforth the 'Northern Lights' pub (aka 'Horse and Jockey' has been refurbished and re-opened under its PROPER original name, the Queen Victoria.

Thank goodness for that, I hadn't noticed!

I just wish they would STOP (permanently) mucking about with original pub names! I don't know anyone who likes that happening.

An Artist's Impression of Kenton Bar housing scheme, 1966 :

The real thing, 1971:

Kenton Bar Pyramid. from Wikipedia - The estate had one famous landmark called the Kenton Bar Pyramid or "pyrry." It was a concrete pyramid with a water feature based in the local shopping centre. Few ever saw the feature working as it was poorly designed and eventually the local authority gave up. It was possible to climb the pyramid by rubbing tar onto the soles of trainers and other shoes. This was a favourite pursuit in the early 80's as tar was readily available as the local authority looked to patch up the flat and often leaking roof tops on the estate.:

In that case you'll be pleased to learn that 'Montpellier's Wine Bar', also on Gosforth High Street, has recently reverted to its proper name, the Earl Grey. They only changed to MWB earlier this year - why, for heaven's sake?

Yes, that one I did know about. It changed it's name for SUCH a short time, didn't it.

How utterly stupid!

The new Queen Vic will not last long judging by the fact that every time I've been passed this week there has never been more than 4 customers in even when other pubs on the High Street have been rammed.

Judging by the clientele I dont think it will be open long either!Still full of Chavers when I was in last weekend, apparently the place was rife with drugs under its Northern Lights guise. The Job Bulman, Brandling and Gosforth Hotel on the other hand I really enjoy going into. I love the selection of beers in the Brandling!

I haven't been in the Brandling for years - but as it's now in the Good Beer Guide I might give it another go. Hard to forgive that new front extension that they tacked onto what was previously quite an elegant building, though.

You should try the County as well, Kieron.

Aye, I only ever go in those three on the High Street and also The County.

The Brandling is great, they've priced the charvers out of the place and have some good real ale and continental lager.
