Shepherds embroiled in row over La Sagesse plan
by Rachel Wearmouth, The Journal, August 11th 2012 CLAIMS THAT donations made by former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd and his brother to the Labour Party could prejudice a planning decision on a controversial complex of luxury homes were made yesterday. Shepherd Offshore, owned by the brothers, lodged plans for 60 luxury homes in Jesmond, Newcastle, earlier this year. Before a meeting of Newcastle city councillors could decide on the £27m plans yesterday, accusations were made that the Shepherd family gave funds to the Labour Party and were known supporters. In a letter to Tom Sunter, the council’s senior solicitor, chairman of the Jesmond Action Group Rex Winter demanded Labour councillors on the committee declare an interest and alleged that the family donated to the party. Mr Sunter said the letter made claims that Labour members of the group “received sponsorship from the party and the Shepherd family are known local Labour supporters” and went on to claim the Shepherds were involved in fundraising for the party. “If the Shepherd family are sponsoring the Labour Party there is not sufficient closeness between those connections to constitute a personal or prejudicial interest.” Bruce Shepherd last night strongly refuted the claims and branded them as silly. Jesmond Dene campaigners face anxious wait
by Joanne Butcher, The Journal, August 11th 2012 CAMPAIGNERS fighting to keep a meadow open to walkers say they have done all they can to win their battle. A public inquiry was this week held into the future of the patch of land on the outskirts of Jesmond Dene, Newcastle. Property developer Mohammed Ajaib has been locked in a dispute with locals over the area, known locally as Donkey Field, since 2000. The Friends of Jesmond Dene claimed Donkey Field contained public footpaths and should be left accessible to walkers. Newcastle City Council refused an initial application for public right of way to be acknowledged, but an inspector from the Lands Tribunal overturned the decision last year. The Friends and representatives for Mr Ajaib attended the two-day public inquiry at Newcastle Civic Centre. Witnesses on both sides set out their arguments before an inspector from the Planning Inspectorate and a site visit was held. Donald McEwan, chairman of the Friends of Jesmond Dene, said he hopes the decision will finally bring to an end 12 years of dispute. I have been puzzled about the lack of schools in Jesmond.
Did it ever have a state secondary school? Was there ever a Jesmond Grammer? |

Not all areas of Newcastle have their 'own' secondary school, there are more areas than there are schools. When I was growing up in Jesmond, my school was in (next door) Heaton. |

Maybe it depends on what you count: There's three on Tankerville Terrace - Church High, Northern Counties/Percy Hedley, West Jesmond Primary.
Then just down Eskdale and Eslington there's another 3 - Royal Grammar, Newcastle Preparatory and Central High. In the north, of course, we had until recently, La Sagesse, and hidden down the Grove, Akhurst. Historically, there had been a school in the west as well, at Stotes Hall (now gone) on Jesmond Dene Road. But no state Secondary Schools. Last edited by DXNewcastle; August 19th, 2012 at 11:25 AM. Reason: adding Akhurst, whose name I couldn't remember. |

During my time living in that area, the nearest State Secondary Schools were "Heaton Grammar School" and "Manor Park Technical Grammar School", before they both became Comprehesive Schools, then eventually merged to bcome "Heaton Manor School".

A couple of things, was the Church High School always a private school? it's such a pretty building.
I have never been able to get my head around where Stotes Hall actually stood. Did it have an original library? |

I can only answer the question about Stotes Hall.
It appears on this map from 1902, on the east side of Jesmond Dene Road. [map of fields with main roads and railway overlaid by Watson Scott, 1902, originally published by Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1904 in "An Account of Jesmond" by F.W. Dendy, "Archaeologia Aeliana, Third Series, Vol 1."] There's just a bit of flat grassland there now, but the road still makes a sharp bend around the site, as if there had been a building there. This view from Google Street view looks across at the site: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=jesm...347.23,,0,2.44 Here's a photo of it in its decline:

I'm doing some research on the Mansion House in Fernwood Road, Jesmond. I'm hoping to find out exactly when it was built and who the architect was. Any help much appreciated.

Mansion House is the official residence of the Lord Mayor. The Victorian building was built in 1880 as two houses, Thurso House and Kelso House. The conversion to one house occurred in 1900. The house was gifted to the city by shipping magnate Sir Arthur Sutherlandas the Mansion House in 1953. http://www.twsitelines.info/Siteline...d!OpenDocument Strangely enough, I can't seem to find it on the heritage list. |

We have discussed the Mansion House a few times in the past, here on the forum, so there are quite a few LINKS on the Index Thread at the top of the forum, to the information provided in those discussions. Most of the discussions actually seem to have been about the previous Mansion Houses, rather than the current one, but the 'bottom link' (under "M" for Mansion House in the Index) does confirm the information provided above, by Squipper. ![]() Missed this, as I was away for a few days last week . . . Shieldfield student flats welcome their first residents by Iain Laing, The Journal, October 3rd 2012 ![]() Vivienne Robinson from Newcastle University with Neil Winch DEVELOPER Danieli Holdings has just opened its latest student flat accommodation block, in which it invested £6m. The Newcastle firm bought the 2,000sq m site in Shieldfield two years ago and has transformed the area – formerly a social club – into a development of 105 flats. Barker House, just east of the City Centre, is now welcoming its first residents after the company handed the building over to Newcastle University. The university has taken a five-year lease on the building and its accommodation services team, NUstudenthomes, will manage the facility for its students.
