One query about the date shown on the commemorative stone however, 1824-5, this extract from the Robert Stephenson Trust web site @ http://www.robertstephensontrust.com/page18.html 1824 His first engagement to work abroad was with the firm of Graham, Herring and Powles who were behind the development of silver mines in South America. Largely as a result of submitting a very well received report on his earlier visit to mines in Cornwall Robert was placed in charge of an expedition to Colombia sailing on 18 th June and not returning before the end of 1827. So did Robert actually reside at Eldon Street, seems debatable. These photographs are of Eldon Street and come courtesy of the City Libraries Archive Collection on Flickr. image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr

What a pleasant-looking street!
Would the Stephensons have lived in one of the houses fronting the street visible at the far end, or in an older house demolished for the mid-Victorian terrace that akes up most of the photos? (or, indeed, neither)

Just had a look at Kelly's Directory of 1921 and at number 21 Eldon Street was the Portuguese Consulate - Roberto De Carvalbo (Consul), so perhaps that is the building with the flag pole?

The Stephensons Plaque
![]() ![]() It is next to Newcastle University on Claremont Road. ![]() What a lovely street indeed. I couldn't find out any info that they lived together at that address? |

Indeed, a lovely street. Interesting that my 1946 edition of "Reid's Plan of Newcastle" street map, shows the street (location as described) as being called Eldon Place . . .

That area is fascinating, we see this time and time again in the development and redevelopment of the city. These areas which are for want of a better word "picturesque" and rural and they fringed a city that was about commerce and not simply shopping. They are "village" and quite self contained.
However that very loveliness knocked out of them by the mid 20th century. |

Olivers Plan of Newcastle 1830 shows that the upper part (North West) as Eldon Street and the lower section linking to Barras Bridge, Eldon Place - so originally one road way but with two separate names.

Yes, think you're right Ken. In another post Steve mentioned he was going on a tour of SJP! I like this view (in your photo Steve) of the new pedestrianised part of Northumberland Road . . . I almost didn't recognise it at first, never seen the pedestrianised stretch from that angle before . . .

![]() It was a really interesting tour and one thing that I did pick up on was that much of the internal signage does still say St James' Park. The guide also said that he still calls the place SJP and so does Ashley - so there you go. |

First question on here from me, for a while.
I've been too busy NOT getting other peoples questions right! Anyway, this photo is dated "circa 1900", and is somewhere in the City Centre - but where?
