While this isn't big news on the national front. There's a bit of celebration happening over on Sen Adel today, with Adelaide finally cracking the double digits in terms of number of cranes in the CBD alone. The total now stands at 10, but will increase to 11 by Christmas.
This is expected to double by the end of next year to over 20, with the commencement of high profile projects such as the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Convention Centre Expansion and Adelaide Oval. And with Olympic Dam getting the final ticket of approval from the State Government, there is a high chance this will increase further beyond 20. Not to mention projects like the Adelaide Oval and Riverbank Precinct have already sparked interest in more developments happening in the city. Good times ahead for Lil ol Adelaide

Adelaideans, who remembers when the Myer Centre was bustling with activity?
Now it's kind of like a ghost mall, probably because of all the negative things that occurred there (the shooting in 04, the many suicides, the boy falling off the escalator). Does anyone remember when it always seemed to be a thriving mall, always bustling with activity and actually looked like an atrium style mall without all the sails. Now it's pretty much a sad waste of space

No it was removed in the 1990s, Brisbane had a similar indoor theme park in their Myer Centre.
Quote:
Most people have probably forgotten about the domestic murder of a Myer worker in 2004, nor even remember the couple of suicide jumpers last decade. Either way that's not the problem. The big problem with the Myer Centre is it's ugly design, poor layout and it takes effort to reach the upper levels. Hence why many stores have relocated downstairs or out of the complex all together. It's hard to believe this thing costed $1 billion to construct. The current U/C Rundle Place shopping plaza has it right. Basement > Foodcourt / Coles Supermarket Ground Floor > Specialist stores/ Laneways Activation / Grenfell St-Rundle Mall Connection Level One > Specialist Stores / Harris Scarfe Level 2 & 3? > Harris Scarfe

One of the problems with Myer is the escalator layout. It's such a chore to get to the upper levels compared to multi-level centres elsewhere. It would have been better if they were done in an X pattern so you didn't need to walk so far on each floor.
But the worst bit is the ground floor. Anyone unfamiliar with the centre has to hunt for the escalators up: they're in the far corners of the ground floor. If the up escalators were right at the main entrance like they are in David Jones, people would be more inclined to go up. It’s so easy to walk into that centre and not even realise there is anything upstairs. Adding the sails and cramming more shops on the ground floor has made it more cluttered and even less obvious there's anything above. Even in Myer, you need to hunt for the way upstairs. The escalator is off to the side hidden behind cosmetics counters and the elevators are down a corridor. It's just badly laid out. David Jones and Harris Scarfe have it right - the escalator is right at the front door. |

have you got your footy season tickets this year Cruise?I clearly remember the Myer Centre when I was in late primary school. Dazzleland was only ever busy in school holidays. During weekdays, it was as dead as it is now, however the 1st 3 levels of the Myer Centre were much busier than it is now. I reckon there was a huge drop off in foot traffic when David Jones moved. There used to be a walkway direct from the Myer Centre into David Jones on levels 2 & 3 which was used heavily to get from Myer to the old DJs. btw, the ground floor of the former David Jones building was so amazing

And is it true that a number of people died in that centre, including a schoolboy? Perhaps that had something to do with deterring people away from the place. |
