If this IS in fact the old ground floor of the old David Jones, then what the hell is wrong with people?! Why on EARTH would you demolish something of such grandeur and classic beauty? The marble is incredible and it actually makes it look like an upper-class department store.

I really hope there are vintage DJ's ground floor's that are still existing in Australia. I think there's something of a smaller scale in Canberra... but woah, that is too beautiful to take away. Look at all that spectacular marble. What a shame

yes, which is why they put all those sails up near the 1st and 2nd levels to stop the suiciders from going splat onto the ground floor or basement

Ugh, that's disturbing. I knew about the sails; they ruin the look of the place, but they certainly are great for safety.

have been living in Perth for 3 months now. Beautiful city but I'm really missing Adelaide and her Copenhagen iced cream, Australian Pizza house, Farmers Union Iced Coffee, cheap as chips, street art, Fringe, cheaper pricing on all things, Coffee Barun Cafe Primo, Prices Fresh Bakery, and CHINATOWN. (Northbridge's asian alleyway isn't the same)

You never realize what you have until it's gone. Cottlesloe is pretty overrated but Hilarys, North Fremantle and Fremantle itself are amazing places!! King's Park is pretty beautiful as well

i will. Give me 3 months!! The people here were so nice when I arrived but after a while, you start to see cracks. I saw buskers getting their props broken by the crowd and drunk ferals swearing and insulting the buskers in front of children while the buskers were doing their show. So dodgy. I spoke to one of the buskers and he said that he gets it on a regular basis and that's one of the downers when it comes to busking. (He also said that his best show was in Adelaide as well but I think that was just flattery haha)

There are a lot of awesome things in Perth however. All around the lake you get some amazing sights and parks that contain nobody so you can have a nice BBQ with the skyline setting in the background. Harvey's Fresh Orange Juice and Chocolate milk are both amazing as well!! It'd be nice to have a BBQ on the Torrens. It doesn't need to be in the new fancy riverbank area but even in the university of adelaide part of the river would be cool. I'm thinking of emailing the ACC on that. It might be too progressive though. They prefer bonfires.

Barrio and Arcade Lane.

Why can't the city have these kinds of lane way and open bars all year round? Once every couple of months open the weekend to a night of amazing.

This weekened was one of the best in a long while and I WISH I took advantage and went more to these places during the Fringe.

I understand Winter could be hard but plop in a few heaters and make it all accessable for thatkind of weather. The vibe in Adelaide has been amazing. I wish there was more of an effort made to keep this city alive all year round. Our winters aren't bad at all compared to other cities so why not ?

I agree, also this cool outdoor wine bar has opened on Union Street, behind the Crown & Anchor. Unfortunately its more of a trial and will close at end of March. Not sure why it have to close?

Barrio is brilliant, wish it could stay open for a few more weeks

Why not make it once a month?

In the middle of winter or beginning of spring, open up a festival, call it something like Laneway or Laneway Festival where all of the cities alley ways become cafe's or bars. Give it a theme and BOOM. Adelaide, WE HAVE TO MUCH POTENCIAL! Lets live it out dam it! We don't need 200m+ buildings to show em what a decent party we can pull!

Usually I don't pay much attention to these surveys, but there is definitely growing positive and optimism in Adelaide these days compared to previous years. The tipping point was the approval of the Adelaide Oval Redevelopment last year IMO.

South Aussies most optimistic in nation

MAD March, a laidback lifestyle, rich natural wonders and affordable housing - it's no wonder we're feeling good about the state and our future.

South Australians are the most positive people in the nation, according to a new report.

About 1200 Australians were surveyed for the latest Allianz Future Optimism Index to measure public sentiment in May about future prospects and happiness.

SA not only recorded the highest score - 57 out of a possible 100 - but also made the biggest attitude shift.

In January we were, by comparison, in the doldrums with the lowest score in the nation of 39 compared with the happiest state Victoria's 54.

However, Victorians were feeling a little worse off by May slipping to 51, behind WA (52), Queensland (53) NSW (55) and SA (57).

SA's latest result is also higher than the national average of 54.

Adelaide remains the cheapest mainland capital for housing, with a median price of $365,000 compared with Melbourne's $460,000 and Sydney's $500,000.

With that affordable housing, our lower cost of living and great lifestyle, plus Mad March and the Crows' successful season to bolster spirits, we were feeling optimistic by May. Younger Australians aged 18-34 improved their outlook more than any other age group and seniors were the happiest about the future, while women were more optimistic than men.

Advantage SA chief executive Karen Raffen said Adelaide's Fringe, Festival of Arts, Cabaret Festival and Tasting Australia, and Black Caviar's victories at Morphettville and the Crows successful season were "all positives that make people feel good about themselves".

Acting Lord Mayor David Plumridge said the city's redevelopments were likely to be having "a positive impact on perceptions" of Adelaide.

"(Adelaide City Council's reinvigoration project) Splash Adelaide has also added a lot of colour and vibrancy to the city over the past six months and the ground-breaking overhaul of city planning reforms earlier this year has boosted city development prospects and is encouraging investors, developers and architects to look at Adelaide in a whole new light," he said.

Professor Richard Blandy, an adjunct professor with UniSA's School of Management, said it was not surprising that adults under 35 and those over 65 were more optimistic than the middle group aged 35-64, who tended to have the most responsibilities.

"It is the U-bend of life," he said. "At both ends - the youngsters and oldies are both very happy."

Friends and co-workers at Sportsgirl Rundle Mall, Linh Nguyen and Pia Runge, both 27, said they felt extremely optimistic about living in SA.

"It's just so easy to get to things and you always know you are going to run into someone you know," Ms Runge said.

Ms Nguyen said she particularly liked attending events such as the Fringe. "Adelaide has a really good vibe," she said.

baha from the Brisbane Courier Mail
http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/q...-1226450379684

Quote:
QUEENSLAND tourism and business chiefs have slammed a controversial international survey by the prestigious Economist magazine which ranks Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth as more liveable cities than Brisbane on the world map.

The Global Liveability survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit of 140 worldwide cities names Melbourne as the most liveable city on the planet, followed by Vienna in Austria, and Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary in Canada.

Adelaide ranks as the fifth most liveable city in the world, followed by Sydney (7th) and Perth (9th). Auckland, New Zealand ranks 10th while Brisbane is way back in the field, listed as No.20.

Well-known Brisbane company director and tourism entrepreneur Jim Kennedy describes the survey as "simply rubbish".

"After all, if you want to live in a cemetery, live in Adelaide. I travelled there often while I was a board member of Santos and I couldn't wait to get out of the place. It simply doesn't compare with Brisbane."

Mr Kennedy, who has chaired several tourism bodies and run numerous tropical islands in Queensland, said the state offered much including the Outback, Sunshine and Gold coasts and Port Douglas.

"We have much better weather. This survey also depends on the age group of people doing it and the criteria set. How could you compare Vienna or Toronto with Brisbane?" he said.

"You can play golf here 52 weeks in the year and swim most days. We have beaches and sunshine and many people are moving here. Anyone who comes up with a survey suggesting that Adelaide is more liveable than Brisbane has been living in a cave."

The state's wealthiest person Clive Palmer also laughed at suggestions Adelaide was more liveable than Brisbane.

"I find that very hard to believe," he said before jumping on his new jet last night.

RBS Morgans chief economist Michael Knox, who has lived in both Adelaide and Brisbane, didn't think Adelaide was more liveable than Brisbane. "Brisbane has more performing arts and infrastructure than Adelaide and I do not think it is more liveable," he said.

However, he pointed out that Melbourne and Adelaide were carefully planned cities in the late 19th century while Brisbane was not. "I think the people that designed Melbourne were the more far-sighted of the city fathers. And then Melbourne was the second largest city after London in the British Empire at the end of the 19th century."

The global liveability report surveys locations around the world to assess the best or the worst living conditions.

Cities are scored on political and social stability, crime rates and access to quality health care. It also measures the diversity and standard of cultural events and the natural environment; education; and the standard of infrastructure, including public transport.

"Australian cities continue to thrive in terms of liveability - not only do they benefit from the natural advantages of low population density, but they have continued to improve with some high-profile infrastructure investments," Economist Intelligence Unit survey editor Jon Copestake said.

Generally..... I didn't find the CBD of Brisbane anymore exciting than Adelaide's, just bigger obviously, but bigger doesn't= more liveable

OMG, well I actually found Adelaide's city centre to be far more interesting than Brisbane's with all its beautiful old, grand historic buildings and all those lovely green plane trees. It had a very beautiful European feel. Skyscrapers can be quite dull and repetitive after a while unless we're talking New York or Hong Kong Preserve the historic buildings, build a few more modern ones and Adelaide will be ideal.

Adelaide's disgusting, drunken fuelled violence

What is it with people down in Adelaide? The men outside of clubs seem to be out to prove their masculinity by throwing a few punches, but it's just escalating and getting out of hand. What does violence solve? It throws people in hospital. It makes people scared of you. Your stigmatised for the rest of your life. I saw a video on the news with a few guys involved in a brawl on Waymouth Street and let me tell you, I won't be going out in Adelaide at night for a long time.

This happens everwhere though. I wouldn't say Adelaide has a worse problem than anywhere else.
