It did look a little large for Regina.

Yep, Toronto is a horrible football town. Torontonians don't support any of their football teams. Regina, on the other hand, is one of the best football cities on the continent. They love their team and deserve a great football stadium:

That second design is definitely sexier and would instantly make Regina home to the best stadium in the country. If Regina ends up building something like that, I'd be more than impressed.

Well; the stadium alone is pretty dead. But something new is in the horizon.

REGINA -- City council in Regina has voted in favour of working with a private-sector partner to build, finance and maintain a new football stadium in the city's downtown.
The stadium is part of a proposed $1-billion redevelopment that would also include housing, retail and commercial projects. Construction could start in 2013, with the completion date set for 2016. City administrators will spend the next year crafting a request for proposals. Council heard Monday that 19 local, national and international companies are interested in looking at a partnership to help build a new home for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Mayor Pat Fiacco (fee-AH'-koh) says the partnership would prevent the city from taking on all the risk of cost overruns and other unexpected problems. |

REGINA -- The Saskatchewan Roughriders and the province are teaming up to give Mosaic Stadium a facelift in time for the 2013 Grey Cup.
The CFL team will spend $14 million to improve the facility as part of a Grey Cup legacy project the Riders unveiled Friday. The provincial government will also provide a $6.2-million loan. The plan is to turn the stadium into a bowl and boost its seating capacity to 33,000. An 18 metre-high LED screen will be also be added. Club chairman Roger Brandvold says while the goal remains to build a new stadium, the improvements to Mosaic were needed with Regina hosting the 2013 Grey Cup. "This is a very ambitious and much needed plan for Mosaic Stadium over the next few years," Brandvold said Friday in a statement. "Replacing Mosaic Stadium still remains our top priority, but certain upgrades needed to be made to get us through the next few years and especially the 2013 Grey Cup." The project's first phase will see the addition of 7,000 temporary seats as well as corporate boxes to the north and south end zones. The first phase will also include new concession and washroom facilities to create a bowl-like atmosphere and boost the seating capacity to 33,000. The second phase will add another level of bleachers to increase overall capacity to almost 50,000 for the Grey Cup game. Following the Grey Cup, only the second tier of temporary seats will be removed to maintain the bowl-like configuration for up to 33,000 fans. "While each phase of this plan is a temporary solution, its legacy will make an impact throughout Saskatchewan for decades to come," said team president Jim Hopson. "When the new stadium is ready, and the stands are no longer needed, each section can be dismantled and donated to amateur sports programs across our province." Construction of a new stadium is scheduled to begin in 2013 with completion expected in 2016. Mosaic stadium is owned and operated by the city of Regina. |

Yer puttin lipstick on a beaver I say!
Saskatchewan and Regina need a proper stadium, so why not do the Vancouver approach? Build say a 30,000 seater temporary venue somewhere else, forget about hosting the Grey Cup for a year or two whilst the existing stadium is leveled and totally built anew (assuming you still want that location of course).

Roughrider fans get news they were all waiting for: New stadium for 2017
REGINA -- Football fans in Saskatchewan have received the news they were waiting for -- a deal has been struck to build a new stadium. Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall announced the news to fans at the city's current football facility, Mosaic Stadium, prior to Saturday's CFL game between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the BC Lions. The new 33,000-seat stadium will be built on Ervaz Place lands in Regina and is expected to be ready in early 2017. Wall called the Roughriders "Canada's Team" and he said it deserves a world-class stadium. The news was greeted by hoots and cheers from the stands. The province says the facility won't have a roof for the field, but that it will be built so one can be added later. Mosaic Stadium, with its bench-style seating, is structurally sound but it is also one of the oldest buildings in the Canadian Football League. It was originally built as a rugby field in 1910 and has been renovated numerous times over the years. Under the memorandum of understanding announced Saturday, the $278 million required for the stadium will be funded through an $80 million grant from the province, along with $73 million from the City of Regina, a news release from the Saskatchewan government said. The Roughriders will raise $25 million. The news release also says the province will provide a 100-million loan to the city, to be repaid with interest over 30 years. It says the loan would be primarily repaid through a $12 facility fee on games and major events held in the new stadium. Work on the design for the new facility is still taking place. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2013. DREAMS DO COME TRUE! )))

REGINA - New Riders Stadium (33,000)
It's been mentioned in the Canada Stadium thread - but I think it deserves it's own thread.

I hope the new design is a good as this previous Roughrider proposal, but without the roof. This one could be built 'roof ready' at 33,000 with the ability to expand for Grey Cups. The roof could be an option 10-20 years later.

Are they 100% sure that a retractable roof will be added in the years after the stadium's completion?
Or are they just currently entertaining the idea of adding a roof, and not being serious about the idea at the moment? Personally, I think the new stadium would look just fine without a retractable roof. A "spectator roof" would be all that is necessary. Just come up with a unique design that rivals that of Investors Group Field. |

Why is there no mention of seat licenses for this? That's the accepted way of keeping the taxpayers from footing the bill. And they are footing more than 50% of this.
