The NFL did better than that yesterday. That's why the NFL has a salary cap of $90 million and is profitable, while the CFL's cap is under five million and teams are struggling to not go under.
Huh? Did you not read anything that I wrote. Revenue will increase if better, bigger name players were signed. It's a domino effect; more star names, equals more "buzz" which equals greater attendance, which equals a ton more money in broadcasting rights, which equals higher merchandise revenue, etc.

Of course the Lions are only averaging 29k in a 55k stadium, the players are all no names. If Peyton Manning was the starting qb for BC and was throwing to Larry Fitzgerald, do you not think they would sell out every game? If every CFL team had 2 or 3 elite name players, the league would explode.

As for broadcasting rights, again you have not a clue... One or two players do not change sports, no matter how big of names. Sure TSN will renegotiate the broadcast rights for money if Manning moves to the CFL, NOT! Why would any business volunteer to pay more than their contract?

As for the US market, these pay per view channels will pay peanuts for tv rights, because that is what they are worth in the US.

Think CFL and you'll be CFL. That is what this league is and will be. You want it to be the NFL, move to the USA and cheer all you like.
Who? Rocket Ismail was a rookie from Notre Dame, he hadn't been established in the NFL yet. Ricky Williams was a drug addict who was banned from the NFL. What other players are you talking about? I'm talking about every team having 2 or 3 big name players per roster.

Signing big names isn't going to do anything, but bankrupt teams. The people who actually care about pro football in Canada are already going to the games. Those people who will only show up if some big name is signed aren't worth catering to. The CFL should concentrate on fans of the sport, not people attracted to glitz, glamour, and coolness factor.

The CFL already went through this in the 80s... Here's an excerpt from the book Blood, Sweat and Cheers: Sport and the Making of Modern Canada by Colin D. Howell. Click on the link and read the rest of that page, it's quite fetching:

Quote:
In the mid-1980s, Vancouver real estate magnate Nelson Skalbania bought the Montreal Alouettes and embarked on a project to raise the profile of the CFL in the United States and land a lucrative television deal south of the border. But his highly publicized signings of American stars Vince Ferragamo, Billy "White Shoes" Johnson, and David Overstreet failed to result in success either on the field or at the gate.

Gee, you think that maybe it's bad for team chemistry to have 2-3 players making several million dollars, and the rest having to work 8-5 in the off season to pay the mortgage ...

Hope you enjoy watching your nfl mate.... This is the CFL always has been always will be. A working mans league, for the average person.

Does the average fan want to see has beens and drug addict rejects from the nfl playing in the CFL? Or would we rather see home grown talent from the actual communities....

Roger Aldag, Chris Szarka, Ray Elgaard. Brought more fans to the stadium in Regina than any superstar ever did....

Do Aussies say 'mate' as well? I guess Britain has always had lots of influence in Australia.

As has already been stated, in the 50's and 60's the two leagues were on par regarding salary and attendance.

What "superstar" ever played for the RoughRiders?

They are all superstars in Rider Fans eyes mate. That's the difference that you will never understand. True football fans cheer for the team and the players not some coked up blinged out jackass.

You want to go back to the 50's and 60's, hell go further back to the 1900's when the CFL or it's predecessor was well above and beyond the nfl then....

Uh......you're the one that said that the CFL players were a far bigger draw then any "superstar". I was quoting you.

P.S. What's with the "mate" thing? I lived in Ontario and never heard anyone use that. Are you a wannabe Aussie?

If it looks familiar - it's because it has the same architect as the City of Manchester Stadium

OK, where do you put extra seats for something like the Grey Cup?
