The check in desks at the station are currently only used for school educational a, and unlikely to be used for airlines again.

Many years ago they were used for checking in flights of Travelcitydirect who operated high-density Boeing 747-300's to Orlando. These would carry around 500 passengers per flight. The aircraft were operated by Air Atlanta Icelandic but wore Travelcitydirect-branded livery. As part of XL Group, the operation faced collapse in 2008, but Virgin purchased the brand and incorporated the former programme into their own scheduled Orlando operation. I don't recall seeing those check-in desks in regular operation since that time.

Thanks for the replies. Why there at the Station though? Understand there is quite a capacity hall there but I wasn't aware there was particular strain at check-ins at that time. Just seems a strange place to have it.

In the past Heathrow had an even more distant check in facility at the West London air terminal on Cromwell Road in Kensington, given London's traffic, wonder how many people checked their bags in at that facility and then missed their flight getting held up in a jam on the journey to the actual airport.
Closed in the 70's I think.

t

Think Manchester might have had sonething similar, if far smaller, in the city centre (Of Manchester obviously, not London) but can't find any pictures if it did.

It may still be the case (it used to be) that the station was used for organised tours - football etc - as fans could all be bussed there and check in together.

Of course with the increase in online check in, mobile boarding passes and self check in machines, plus Terminal 2's additional lower level desks, the capacity is probably no longer needed there.

I just want them to finally go public with the location and final design of the piers. Each render is different.

And the amount of them and their gates.

Totally agree, it would be good to see 'final' renditions.

By the way Chaps1954 I assume you took the piling date from either Pprune or F4A?

What an awful set-up.

Cul-de-sacs never work well; but MAN has always pursued a policy of cobbled together compromises; can't upset the retired Major in Knutsford, mustn't disturb the newts, no point building that taxiway, buckets for the leaky ceiling, just patch up wherever the taxiways fail. Uggh.

And now this, for a negligible net gain of stands.

Still, you'll have a better "experience" whilst you wait for your outbound aircraft to get to its blocked stand...
