Though it looks boxy, its a practical design i feel... the front/outside elevation is still not final and i don't think SOM will give such a bland design.. lets wait and watch..

I think the new design is lovely! Airports must be practical and I think this design is. Furthermore it's not like the design has anything negative, it's pleasing to the eye and it's absolutely practical.

Thankfully I wasn't expecting some architectural masterpiece. I love plain and simple.

There are no plans of turning T1 into LCC terminal as of now.. Both T1 and T2 will be for mixed use for domestic and international..
However, in the master plan, there is a space dedicated for T3 (east of T2, near the STP) which will most likely be an LCC terminal.

off topic.

Qatar Airways renews plans for Indian market entry

Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) has once more reiterated its plans to enter the Indian market, this time through an airline wholly-owned by its parent firm.

Airline Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akbar al Baker told a media conference at the ongoing ITB Berlin Travel Trade Show that the Qatar Investment Authority, Qatar's sovereign wealth fund and Qatar Airways parent, would be the most suitable vehicle for establishing the carrier. The QIA would then use Qatar Airways to run the venture, he said. Al Baker told The Times of India an application would soon be made to the Indian government for approval. Once operational, the carrier would operate up to 100 narrowbody aircraft, he added.

It is recalled that in an effort to foster greater investment in the country's aviation sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government last year relaxed investment laws governing foreign ownership of local carriers.

Under its revised terms, sovereign wealth funds have been permitted to own up to 51% of Indian scheduled passenger airlines. Foreign carriers are, however, still capped at a maximum of 49%. Government approval must be secured for any investment and it is here that the proposal may falter.

According to The Hindu newspaper, a senior Ministry of Civil Aviation official has confirmed that the Indian government has put its proposal to dilute the new investment law's substantial ownership and effective control (SOEC) clause on hold following opposition from the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA).

The report states SpiceJet (SG, Delhi Int'l) Chairman Ajay Singh and IndiGo Airlines (6E, Delhi Int'l) President Aditya Ghosh are expected to raise the topic of Qatar Airways' market entry during an audience with Civil Aviation Secretary R.N. Choubey on Friday, March 10.

KIA is best regional airport in central Asia

BENGALURU: The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has won the SKTRAX Award 2017 for being 'the best regional airport in India and central Asia'. Also known as the passenger choice award, the World Airport Awards are based on 13.82 million survey questionnaires from July 2016 to February 2017, covering 550 airports around the world.

The KIA had been previously recognized as the Best Airport in India by SKYTRAX in 2011 and the Best Regional Airport in Central Asia in 2015. Regional airports refer to those operating short int ernational and domestic flights, rather than intercontinental schedules.

The world awards evaluated traveller experience across 39 key performance indicators. A key directive was for customers to make their own personal choices and parameters on which airport they considered to be the best. The award was announced at the World Airport Awards, held at the Passenger Terminal EXPO in Amster d am, Netherlands, on Tuesday.

Sanjay Reddy, managing director, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), said over the last year they had innovated and introduced many initiatives that focused on simplifying passenger travel to offer passengers an easy experience at the airport.

KIA is the busiest airport in southern India and the third largest in the country. It caters to over 22 million passengers annually and is growing at 22.5% year-on-year.

The World Airport Awards are a global benchmark for airport excellence.

Biometrics-enabled e-boarding trial completed at Bengaluru airport

An e-boarding pilot, powered by Safran Identity & Security’s MorphoWave touchless biometric technology deployed in a fully operational environment, has been successfully completed at Southern India’s busiest airport, Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru (BLR).
The process throughput was developed and designed together with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the operator of the BLR Airport, in accordance with the Indian Aviation Security Policies. It is based on real-time biometric authentication of passengers using their Aadhaar ID. Passengers are able to complete all the airport processes from the airport entry kiosk to boarding, by simply waving their hands.
MorphoWave is a high-speed, contactless fingerprint scanner that captures and matches fingerprints in less than one second with a single hand wave through the sensor. MorphoWave facilitates and accelerates the different stages in a passenger journey.
The new process also improves the passengers’ travel experience by integrating travel and identity documentation checks, ensuring seamless access to all check-points at the airport, reducing queue waiting times and making the passenger’s journey hassle-free and paperless.

Arrivals, departures at multiple levels
Rasheed Kappan, Bengaluru, march 17, 2017, DHNS:
Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru. DH file photo

Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru. DH file photo
Targeted at a March 2021 commercial launch, the second terminal of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here will be equipped with three Airbus-380 (A380) gates. This will be in addition to the single A380 gate in the existing Terminal-1.

Designed by the American firm, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), Terminal-2 with its four A380 Code-F gates (based on aircraft wingspan) will hugely boost KIA's capacity to handle newer wide-bodied aircraft. Only the Delhi airport will be better.

Documents accessed by DH indicate that the T-2 project will feature the main terminal building and a pier structure that extends around three sides of the main building. Expansion joints will span across the terminal.

The second terminal, excavation and ground works for which are at an advanced stage, is being built in two phases. The first phase will cater to 25 million passengers per annum (MPPA), expanding to 45 MPPA in Phase-II.

Two-level terminal
The terminal building structure will have two main levels, one housing Arrivals and the other, all Departures. Secondary utilities will be packed into the intermediate mezzanine floors.

Covering an area of about 400m X 400m, the main terminal structure will be 30m tall. The pierstructure is approximately 22m wide and 20m tall. Cantilevered steel louvers will surround the main terminal roof.

It is learnt that the base structure of the terminal below departures level will be composed of reinforced concrete floor framing systems spanning to reinforced concrete columns. The lateral system will consist of a reinforced concrete moment frame to resist wind and seismic loads.

Above the departures level, the structural system for the main terminal roof will consist of steel moment frames at regular grids. This design is to resist both lateral and gravity loads.

The pier's structural system, according to sources, will feature reinforced concrete at the Arrivals level. The roof of the Departures level will be built with one-way structural steel trusses, according to the master plan.

Necessary provisions will be made in the second terminal plan for an interface with a Multi-Level Car Park and an Airport Metro station. The interface will cater to both pedestrians and baggage connections.

T-1 expansion
The airport's 22.5% year-on-year passenger traffic growth in 2016 has forced an expansion of the existing terminal (T-1) as well. Sources said the terminal capacity will be upgraded to 26.5 million over the next 12 months. In 2016, KIA handled 22.18 million passengers.

As part of the upgrade, three new bus gates are expected to be added at the domestic side. The seating capacity is likely to be enhanced by 350.

As long as the elevation view looks good and the interiors look good, does the top view really matter that much?
From the renderings, the side view is quite elegant.
They couldprobably add something later to make it fancier the way they did with terminal 1 and its gull wings.

looks like right half of the new terminal is for phase 1.. maybe they will add some non-box structure for phase 2 left half.. anyway multi level is arrival/departure is good.

hope second runway with CAT IIIB will be done before next winter fog conditions..
