Iskandar Malaysia attracts RM273b investments
By Bernama - November 7, 2018 @ 7:42pm
Quote:
JOHOR BAHRU: Iskandar Malaysia recorded investments totalling RM19.8 billion in the first nine months of this year, raising the cumulative investments committed since 2006 to RM272.90 billion.

In a statement today, Iskandar Regional Development Authority Chief Executive Datuk Ismail Ibrahim said despite the current global challenges, Iskandar Malaysia was optimistic and on track to achieve its investment target for 2018.

“As Iskandar Malaysia sails through its third development phase (2016 – 2025) focusing on sustainability and innovation, the region's inflow of investments from domestic and foreign investors continues to grow,” he said.

Ismail said in the third quarter of this year, the top five sectors contributing to total investments were mixed development with RM9.7 billion, logistics (RM670 million), creative (RM540 million), education (RM540 million) and tourism (RM320 million).

He said recent investments in the promoted sectors in Iskandar Malaysia included the Shattuck St Mary's Forest City International School by Country Garden Pacificview Sdn Bhd, Tunku Laksamana Cancer Centre by Asian American Medical Group and Toppen Shopping Centre by IKEA Southeast Asia.

Of the total committed investments from 2006 to Sept 2018, 59 per cent or RM161.33 billion has been realised. A total of RM20.8 billion was realised in the first nine months of this year alone
, he noted.

“Domestic investors contributed 60 per cent to the total committed investments or equivalent to RM164.9 billion and the other 40 per cent, or RM108 billion, comes from foreign investors. The top five foreign countries investing in the (Iskandar) region are China, Singapore, the United States, Japan and Spain.

“Of the total foreign investments, 57 per cent is in services sectors and 43 per cent is in manufacturing. This inflow of investment will continue to benefit the rakyat in many different ways, such as more job and business opportunities, as being inclusive has always been at the heart of the development in Iskandar Malaysia,” said Ismail.

He added this was reflected by the recent Iskandar Malaysia Employment Fair, where more than 1,000 jobs were offered in the region, and the creation of more than 740,000 jobs in Iskandar Malaysia since 2006.

“According to The Star, Osman said that so far, there have not been any negative comments about the revival of the crooked bridge following the state government's explanation on the matter. "This is to solve the congestion at both entry points … and it only gets worse during holidays," he was quoted saying in the report.”

IMO, the purpose of this crooked bridge is purely to allow water in the straits to flow and allow small vessels to sail under. I cannot understand how it can help solve congestion when the end-points of this bridge remain the same existing infrastructure with no added capacity. In other words, the bottle necks at both ends remain the same. The only way to solve congestion is to add capacity at the CIQ booths of both countries at both ends, or by a new crossing altogether, whether by bridge or even ferries.

yeap. the main reason is to clear the water flow. solve traffic? mmm not really.

international airport in Mersing? idk what to say. they should just wider the road from jln kluang to mersing, and i really think they should upgrade and keep upgrade Senai Airport first.

they also, SHOULD allocated the fund to upgrade the public hospitals for Sultanah Aminah, Sultan Ismail (wider the waiting area, add more chairs, add rooms, bed, equipments and so on) + build 3rd public hospital in JB too..

open and upgrade new roads in JB (from 2 lanes to 3 lanes, flyover and so on).. not just making statement to make people read - oh he done his part, but in really, it's nothing actually.

yeap couldnt agree more. crooked bridge is not for solving congestion prob. mersing airport even for small sized aviation is also not feasible at this point of time. Govt should emphasize on infrastructure connecting small cities with major ones throughout Johor and neighbouring states. With federal's plan to promote aviation reit, they probably should look into realising Senai Aviation Hub/City which there are already initiatives to develop the masterplan.

if not mistaken Johor MB did mention about having 2 new govt hospitals in Pasir Gudang and Kempas. Fingers crossed that the plan runs accordingly, and they should also upgrade HSA especially, which is ageing. HSI will soon to follow if the building maintenance team does not buck up.

I also agree the Mersing airport idea is needless. How many people /citizens will this actually benefit? How many people actually want to fly to Mersing or Tioman? Look at the Malacca airport for example - it’s a white elephant.

This state government should stop thinking merely about attention-grabbing mega projects, but think more of the needs of ordinary Johoreans, namely, better health care/hospitals, better roads, better community parks etc. The condition of roads in JB is pathetic - potholes, no lane markings, lighting all rosak...etc!

SURE CAN!! it's just their first outlet in our city. give them time to open few more outlets in JB and grow. Johoreans and Singaporeans get introduce to Japan's snacks and goodies without going to Japan..

FamilyMart is like 7E and any other convenience store but famous for it's ice cream, udon, sandwiches and many more.. it's cool they choose Skudai in Johor for their expansion plan. we, Johoreans are welcoming new retailers brand each year..

welcome to JB FamilyMart! #positivevibes #iloveJB

Johor aims to become location of Airbus maintenance facility
Published 2 days ago on 14 November 2018

By Ben Tan

JOHOR BARU, Nov 14 — Johor may have a high chance of becoming the next preferred location as a maintenance facility for European aerospace corporation Airbus aircraft, said Johor International Trade, Investment and Utilities Committee chairman Jimmy Puah Wee Tse.

He said the proposal was seen to be a positive response during a recent working visit to France from November 3 to November 10 to promote Johor as the ideal investment destination for French investors.

“Johor gained attention by becoming one of the preferred locations for major suppliers of the Airbus Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and maintenance,” he said yesterday.

Puah revealed that in the world, there were only three major suppliers of Airbus’ GSE and maintenance, and one of them had showed interest in expanding their business in Johor.

“Johor is the preferred location for them to develop an infrastructure to cater to the needs and markets in Asia Pacific region,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Puah, who is also the Bukit Batu assemblyman, said the idea of expanding the aerospace industry in Johor has always been a priority of the state government, as well as acquiring quality investment resources.

“Johor has always been a choice for investment due to its proximity to Singapore, having world-class airports and infrastructure with a pro-business environment.

“Along with the national aerospace blueprint, Johor is well equipped and can provide the best ecological system for the aerospace industry, especially in the maintenance and repairing sectors,” he said.

During the working trip, the delegation, led by Puah, also attended several seminars and dialogues which successfully attracted more than 100 participants in total.

In 2017, the trade value between France and Malaysia amounted €5.1 billion (RM24.07 billion).
