Hamilton Associates have submitted planning proposals for a new 25 storey energy-efficient tower in Aldgate (London). The building will have 287 apartments including affordable housing, plus retail units at ground floor.
The tower adopts an irregular rounded corner plan form and the top is crowned by an aerodynamic ‘flying’ wing profile.
I had a temp job in Alie Street a few years back, at the Royal Bank of Scotland (that red bricked building on the right is the exact place I do believe).
This is near the site of Minerva. I think it will interfere with views of the Tower of London:
I remember this being talked about yonks ago and wondered if we'll ever see anything.
Interesting one - this will be a stone's throw from Aldgate Union (which is to have a tower at some point), which is a stone's throw from the Seifert Hotel proposed on the opposite corner, which in turn is a stone's throw from Minerva.
I'm not sure how this will affect the setting of the Tower, afterall this is quite a way back, so from the South Bank it may not stick out as much. That said, this is hardly something I'd want to see behind the Tower. A bit too bland for my liking.

Which is a stones throw from the massive Beetham site being designed by Foreign Office Associates- We should hopefully be seeing info on it this year as its been planned for well over 6 months now- I reckon they could squeeze a tower on the northern end of the Site as thats probably far enough form the ToL & not far fromwhere Minerva is

yeah I think it could be too wide from the side, not good... the whole bloody point about residential bocks is that they can be thin if they cant be that tall thus retaining and elegent profile!
Difficult tower to love this one! A bit of imagination pleeeeaaaaase!
I'm always for more residential space in the city centre and it's interesting to read that the city believe they are losing out to canary wharf because of it. This and the new barbican tower could just be the start of some exciting times.
I would be interested to see how this impacts the Tower though. If it's about 80m that can't be much more than many of the mid rise office blocks around there.

The only development IN the barbican will be the renovation of frobisher crescent which when first constructed was turned into a business school rather than residential units.
As for around the barbican there are hoardings for another office block further along silk street.
The red brick building in that rendering was to be the site of the Goodman's Field Tower, which I seem to remember was rumoured to be over 100 storeys. It was nothing more than an internal proposal though and nothing was ever designed, but I seem to remember the biggest problem they faced was such a massive tower impacting on the Tower Of London.
Whether times have changed enough or not remains to be seen. I think this hotel tower will have an impact, as EH are bound to stick their oar in at some point, but I reckon it will get permission quite easily. The Eastern fringe is in massive need of somekind of residential resurgence as it will have excellent transport links what with Crossrail passing through the area at some point.
I dont see much of a problem for this to get planning, after all it will only be 75/80 m and there is that horrid 70 ish m block at aldgate union a few metres north.
Is the address of this proposal an error? Having recently walked along Alie St it's nowhere near long enough to have an address as high as 252, and on Skyscraper News the same building appears as 61-75 Alie St. (see http://www.skyscrapernews.com/buildings.php?id=4680)
Some confusion here, methinks?
